My dog bites my shoes and unties laces on walks. Why and how to stop?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. I would recommend stop letting him chew on old shoes. He does not understand the difference and will just see the shoes on your feet as moving chew toys. This is likey a fun game for him. Put away all the old shoes. Then if he goes for the shoes on your feet, redirect him to something positive such as a toy. If he is still going after your shoes, walk a way for a bit. He needs to learn this is not an appropriate way to play. I hope this information helps!

A puppy explores the world by putting things in their mouth. This goes for ok things like food and chew toys, to irritating things like leashes, as well as dangerous things like rocks and socks. Certainly getting a walking harness that attaches to the back (behind the shoulder blades) is one way to prevent Chloe from being able to access the leash while walking. You can also try using positive reinforcement (like giving her praise or a small treat) after a few minutes of walking without grabbing for her leash. Finally, there is a product called Bitter Apple that can be sprayed onto things you want Chloe to learn are not ok to put in her mouth. Like the name suggests, this product tastes bitter and will hopefully help Chloe learn that her leash is for walking not chewing. I hope this helps!

Biting is very normal for puppies but it should be addressed. You are on the right tract with saying Ouch but then you need to get up and ignore her and keep walking away from her until she stop biting. At that moment you turn around and CALMLY reward her and hand her something more appropriate to play with. This will take time and consistency. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would assume she is doing this to get his attention to play. Bella is young and needs a lot of exercise and interaction. I would add more walks or play time. Consider enrolling her in doggie daycare a few times per week. Otherwise I would have a leash on her at all times and when she starts this behavior, pull her down, make her sit and remove her from the situation. Consider 5-10 mins in "time out" in another room or crate. Then exercise her. I hope this helps!

It can help to try to build a positive association with the leash by walking him places he ants to go - towards his food at mealtimes, to the door to go out etc. Keep toys and ask him to sit and wait whilst n the lead in order to keep him focused. It can help to walk alongside a more experienced, buddy dog also so he is more inclined to walk and less inclined to play with the leash!

I would recommend starting on some basic commands with Panda. This would include sit, come and stay. That way when Panda starts to chew on your feet you can re direct her into a basic command. I would reward her with a treat so he knows that the command is the way she should be acting, I would also recommend starting her in puppy training classes to help with her attention. It's likely that Darby is frustrated about not being able to get somewhere that she wants to go - you can help this problem by calling her name and encouraging her to go in a different direction, and rewarding with a treat when she follows you. Biting and mouthing is very normal behavior for a puppy this age - this is how puppies explore the world, and how they instinctively want to play. Make sure that she has a variety of different toys to provide an appropriate outlet for this behavior - long floppy rope or fleece toys for tugging, plush toys for biting and carrying, and smaller toys or balls for chasing and fetching. She should also have lots of different things to lay and chew on, such as bully sticks, rawhide chews, cow or pig ears, and puzzle toys such as a Kong stuffed with peanut butter. She will grow out of this behavior on her own as she gets older, but in the meantime, just redirect her to one of her own toys and use that to play with her instead. If she continues to get overly excited and try to bite, give her something to chew on (such as one of the options I mentioned above) to encourage her to settle down and relax for a while.
