Signs your dog is done delivering puppies without an ultrasound?

Hello. As long as she is not actively pushing / straining & seems content to care for her new family, she may just need to rest for several hours. It is also not unusual for there to be a 24 hour gap between starting labor & delivering the last puppy. I will tell you that sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between an involuting uterus ( one that is shrinking down ) & the perception that there may be still some puppies. The uterus can be quite "lumpy" at this early stage. If she remains comfortable & there is no excessive drainage ( there will be the normal greenish discharge called lochia ), then I would not be too concerned. But if you are still concerned in 3-4 hours, or she starts pushing with no deliveries after 30 minutes, do see your veterinarian for further evaluation. Contractions can continue for several hours after delivery, that is for the purpose of getting all the placenta out of the uterus. It's not possible for you to know if there are more puppies in her uterus just by feeling her belly, but if you are unsure and worried, the only thing that can give you a definitive answer would be an xray or an ultrasound.

There is no way for us to know online if she is likely to have more, litters from 1-10 + are possible but the average would be 3-6. Straining and contractions would be an indication of active labor but I always recommend an ultrasound scan after delivery to ensure there are no pups left inside which can cause serious infection and threaten the life of the mother and pups

The only way to know for sure is to have an x-ray taken by your vet. If she is still panting and having contractions, then this is a sign that she isn't finished delivering pups yet - so if she's doing this and hasn't had any pups in the past hour, I would recommend taking her to an emergency vet for x-rays. Normally, when labor is finished, the mother will settle down and lick her puppies (or puppy, in this case) and allow them to nurse. If she still seems distressed and panting, or is still having visible contractions, then I would be concerned that there may be one or more puppies still inside her.

Unfortunately it is difficult to say when exactly her delivery date is. Even with an ultrasound or X-ray, you cannot say for sure. If her belly looks big and rounded then I would say she is closer - probably expecting around the 1-2 weeks. Again, I cannot guarantee that because it all depends on how big the dad was as well. Just continue to give her lots of love and if you are okay with having the pups inside your house or in a safe area of your garage I would put some soft blankets or even a large plastic bin or kiddy pool with a lot of bedding in it now so she can get use to it. It isn’t guaranteed that she will choose to use that area but hopefully she will! Also, I would start transitioning (mix old food with new food for 7-10 days) her to puppy food as she will need the extra calories and nitrition while nursing her pups. I hope this helps.

Hello, you may see that Halie is still having active abdominal contractions. However, sometimes it is hard to tell just by looking at them and so an x-ray would be the most helpful in determining if there are still kittens inside Halie's belly. If you're not sure she is done being in labor then I would recommend going to your veterinarian so that they can assess her. Hope this helps

Hello. You can gently squeeze her abdomen working your way back from just behind the ribs toward her hind legs. If you do not feel any significant lumps, then she is done. Since she had no difficulties with the first ones, it is unlikely anyone was left behind. But if you do get concerned, the best is to have her evaluated by your veterinarian.
