Why is my vaccinated Shih Tzu puppy sneezing after playing with dogs?

This could be due to an upper respiratory infection called kennel cough, it's very common in dogs. this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

The vaccine is not 100% protective (just like our flu vaccine) so even if a dog has been vaccinated they can still get kennel cough. The symptoms are usually milder and the course of the disease is shorter in dogs that have been vaccinated versus those that haven't so giving the vaccine is definitely warranted. I suggest you just monitor him for now since he seems to be acting normally. If the coughing gets worse or he starts showing other symptoms then get him to your vet for an exam: * ocular and/or nasal discharge * vomiting/gagging/retching * not eating * lethargy Of course, if you are worried you should take him to your vet for an exam now. Your puppy may have pickd up a respiratory virus or bacteria in the park. This could be the beginning of kennel cough, even though she is not coughing yet. Observer closely, and should the discharge get cloudy or yellowish or if she gets a seriously bad cough, take her in to your vet for an exam. Kennel cough is usually self limiting, and does not need medications unless there is a fever or a seriously debilitating cough. She will also need to be seen by a vet if she gets lethargic, stops eating or drinking or appears obviously ill.

Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition. Poor Lady! I'm sorry that she's been sneezing - but the good news is, it's far more likely that she has a simple respiratory infection vs. something serious or life-threatening. If she's current on her vaccinations and acting normal otherwise, there's virtually no chance that she has distemper - this is mainly a disease of unvaccinated puppies, and affected dogs are extremely sick. Nasal tumors do occur in dogs, but would be statistically unlikely in a fairly young dog like Lady. We worry more about a tumor if there is sneezing that has been going on for weeks or months at a time with no improvement, especially with foul-smelling green or yellow discharge, or bleeding from the nose. I would recommend having her examined by a vet to help determine the problem, and hopefully put your mind at ease. If she does have an infection, your vet can prescribe antibiotics or other medication if needed to treat the problem and make sure that the sneezing resolves.

Hi there. Sneezing could be caused by allergies, or an upper respiratory infection. If he's acting fairly normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, etc.) you could opt to monitor him for now and see how things go for the next few days. The problem may resolve on its own, similar to when we get a minor cold or allergy flare-up. If there is no improvement in the next 2-3 days, or if your pup develops other symptoms such as coughing, thick green or yellow nasal discharge, or begins acting very lethargic or not eating, then I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian for treatment.

She is very beautiful! Without seeing her it is hard to say. Coughing is a sign of kennel cough but the sneezing isn't. While the kennel cough vaccine is a great vaccine, it is like the flu vaccine and doesn't prevent the disease just lessens the severity.
