Why is my 8-week-old Shih Tzu puppy suddenly lethargic but seems fine?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 11 days old | 6 lbs

I have a shih tzu, yesterday was very activte but today no. She is 8wk and 1day her stool is good no liquid and her pee is yellow.

It's good that Bella isn't having diarrhea, and a light yellow color is the normal color of urine. It could be that she simply isn't feeling well today, or she could have played a lot yesterday and is very tired at the moment. I would monitor her for now. and make sure she is still eating, drinking, and going potty normally. Should she still be lethargic after 48 hours, then I would take her into the vet.

These are somewhat vague signs that could be seen with a number of problems, but if Bella has been lethargic and had a decrease in appetite for more than a day I'd recommend seeing your vet. You may want to monitor her closely when she goes outside to defecate: if she has diarrhea it could be the source of the blood smell.

Poor Bella! With her being a small breed dog and if she has truly not peed in a couple of days then I would be worried about her. She could be really dehydrated. There are several things that can cause her symptoms including parasites, a bacterial/viral infection, a toxin, liver or kidney disease and much more. I would have your vet look at her as soon as possible. Your vet will be able to do a thorough exam, assess her hydration, and do bloodwork if needed. Your vet will be able to give her fluids and the appropriate medications to help her feel better. I hope this helps!

Yes, I would definitely be worried about Bella! It sounds like she is very sick, and it's concerning that this has come on suddenly. She needs veterinary care now, as her symptoms sound like a medical emergency to me. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Good luck!

My 8-month-old puppy is lethargic for days but still eating. Why?

From the sign you are describing it is quite difficult to determine the underlying problem. General signs of lethargy could be commonly due to high temperature which may be related to an infection. In puppies gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections are by far the most common type of infections. If the signs do not resolve in the next 24hours or if Luna is showing any inappetence, more evident lethargy or any other signs (vomiting and diarrhoea for example) I would strongly advice a veterinary check up.

My new 2lb maltipoo puppy is lethargic, vomiting, not eating. Is this normal?

It is very concerning when a puppy who is 2 lbs isn't feeling well. It can take time for puppies to adjust to their new surroundings but I don't like how she is very lethargic and vomited. Puppies can become hypoglycemic (low glucose) and can actually have seizures from this. I would recommend bringing Bella to a veterinarian as soon as possible to make sure she is ok. These are certainly scary and concerning symptoms. I'm sure you are very worried about Bella as am I. I would recommend that Bella be seen by a veterinarian right away as the symptoms you report could be signs of something serious like low blood sugar. She is a tiny little dog and a Yorkie as well so there are some breed related issues that can cause similar signs. Seeing a veterinarian right away will help to rule out many things and hopefully get her feeling better as soon as possible. My Shih Tzu has runny diarrhea but seems fine. Should I worry?

Hello! I wouldn’t be too worried about lily at this point. if she is otherwise feeling good, I might try her on a very bland diet for a few days. An example of a bland diet would be boiled skinless chicken breast and steamed white rice (1 part chicken to 2-3 parts rice). If the diarrhea is persisting or if her appetite decreases or if she begins vomiting then I would have her veterinarian evaluate her. It would be a good idea to bring a sample of her stool in if the diarrhea continues so her vet can screen for intestinal parasites. I hope lily is back to herself very soon!

My small puppy has diarrhea and is lethargic. When to see a vet?

It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!
