Why is my Shih Tzu's coat suddenly dry and shedding heavily at 1 year?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 11 months and 18 days old | 11 lbs

My Shih Tzu is about to turn 1 year and since a few weeka ago his coat got very dry. He is also loosing a lot of coat. I can tell because every day I brush him and I take a lot of dead coat from the comb. He is on an air dry food. Same brand I have always used. I also use Chris Christensen grooming range for shampoo and conditioner when I bath him every 2 or 3 weeks. Is it normal for a Shih Tzu loose so many coat? And gets very dry suddenly? Thanks

It is possible that Tank is loosing some of his puppy coat now that he is 1 year old. Also I would make sure he does not have any signs of fleas or parasites that might cause an abnormal coat/ pet to lose hair. I would recommend an aloe and oatmeal shampoo. If that does not help I would recommend taking Tank to a vet to make sure nothing more is going on which might affect the coat growth. Hope that helps

She is young and does not have her full adult coat in yet. make sure she is on a good quality puppy food. You can brush her regularly as this can help. Give her more time as her puppy coat will start to change into her adult coat and the texture and length can still change.

What causes puppy dry skin, hair loss, and shedding on his back?

Dry skin does not generally progress to hair loss and shedding. I would be more concerned that Kane is dealing with an infection in his skin. Demodex mites and ringworm (which humans can get) both can have this appearance. I would recommend to take him into the vet to have an exam and a skin scrape to test for mites. There can be many reasons for hair loss: bacterial or yeast skin infection, Demodex mites, endocrine disorders (low thyroid, cushings), alopecia x and there is a hair loss condition linked to intact make dogs. I would have him seen for blood work that includes thyroid testing and a skin scraping. Putting dogs on Nexgard or Bravecto can also rule out demodex. I wish you the best

My Shih Tzu's skin is dry, flaky, and red after a bath. What can I do?

That area of Albie looks inflamed! If he did not have these lesions yesterday, it may be a reaction to the shampoo. Rewash him in a hypoallergenic shampoo and rinse him very well. Over the counter antihistamines may also help the itching. You may also consider taking him to the veterinarian's office as they will have stronger medications that will work faster to make the itching go away. I hope Albie gets comfortable fast!
