Are Seresto flea collars as good as topical flea treatments for pets?

I prefer spot-ons and chews over collars. The only collar I would recommend is Seresto. This, in my opinion would be superior to Frontline, as in many areas there are resistances to Frontline already.

The only flea collar that appears to work well is the Seresto collar. And even then, I can have a slower rate of kill for the fleas. The top products on the market our oral products such as some Perica and next guard. For most pets, these are good options that I recommend to call your veterinarian first and doublecheck. Also, you will need to treat all the pets in the household for six months to make sure you get through the entire fleet lifecycle. Best of luck.

The Seresto flea/tick collar is the only one on the market that is safe and effective - the others, including Adams, are often dangerously toxic for the dog and not effective at all for fleas in my experience. Advantix is definitely a better choice than PetArmor, but the most effective option available for fleas and ticks currently would be an oral medication like Nexgard or Bravecto. I would recommend getting a prescription from your veterinarian for one of these medications, if possible - this will eliminate the need for any topical medication or flea collars, and will also work much better.

Fleas can be frustrating to treat. I know that many people have a lot of success with Seresto collars, but I have not. In order to treat Bandit’s fleas, I recommend using a good quality topical product, such as Advantage (use monthly) or Bravecto (prescription based and used every 3 months). Flea shampoos are rarely effective and can cause irritation to the skin, so I tend to steer clear of them. Be sure to vacuum daily, dispose of the vacuum bag frequently, and wash Bandit’s bedding in hot water. Continue to apply flea medication regularly in order to disrupt the fleas’ life cycle to prevent a recurrence. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Bandit!

I think that certain flea collars can provide good protection against fleas and ticks for the right dog in the right area. Seresto is the product that I most often recommend. The collar has to stay on all the time, and bathing or swimming can alter the effectiveness of the collar, so if Mia is frequently in water or you don't want her to wear a collar all the time it might not be a good choice. Preventic is another collar, but there is concern for toxicity if the collar is ingested and there may be some concern if there are children or pets in the house that will be chronically exposed. I have also seen over the counter collars that have essential oils or pyrethrins as the active ingredient - in my opinion these don't work well. Your best bet is to ask your vet which collar they think would work best in your area.

I recommend oral flea & tick preventatives. There are several brands, and all are effective: Nexgard, Simparica, and Credelio are monthly, or Bravecto which is given every 12 weeks. My top two are Nexgard and Bravecto. These are prescription products available from your veterinarian. Hope this helps!

Seresto will be most cost-effective. It is a good quality product and lasts for 8 months. It would be a good choice for a working dog. Nexgard is as good (safe and effective) as Seresto but it will cost you more per year compared with Seresto.
