Why is my senior dog yelping when touched and drooling thickly?

It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Sausage evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sausage feel better. I recommend getting her checked by your vet right away. She could have a disc problem in her neck or upper back that is painful. Your vet will do an exam, labwork, and x-rays, and based on these results will be better able to tell you what is wrong with her and what the best treatment will be.

Please have him assessed urgently for injury and inflammation by your vet. Fractures, dislocations, spinal disk disease and abscesses are just some of the possible causes of pain. He should receive urgent pain assessment and medications to help relieve his discomfort and suffering

If this is not the case, small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. This is a potentially serious situation as it can lead to weak or paralysis in certain cases. His veterinarian will be able to guide as far as treatment based on his exam findings. Poor Lucy! Yelping related to being picked up or otherwise physically handled usually indicates that the dog is painful somewhere. Lucy may have arthritis, back or neck pain, or may have injured herself somehow. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. Your veterinarian knows how to do a thorough orthopedic exam to help determine where she may be painful, and may recommend x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem. It's likely that she would benefit from some type of pain medication (either short or long-term, depending on the problem) which your veterinarian can prescribe for her.
