Why is my senior dog squealing in pain when touched or walking?

It sounds like he is in discomfort. I recommend that you have Simon evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Simon feel better. If Jake cannot walk, jump, wag his tag, and cry if you pick him up, then yes he is in a lot of pain. This is very serious, and he should see a vet immediately. Dachshunds are prone to ruptured discs in their back due to their elongated spine, and that could certainly be the cause of his pain. He should be evaluated by a vet immediately, and needs pain medication as well. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe him safe pain medications. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Beagles often have pain from intervertebral disc disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and they will probably prescribe pain medication and perhaps a muscle relaxer also. I treat these dogs with laser and acupuncture. It’s important to prevent jumping and let them rest. This may take a few weeks to resolve. Poor Lily! If she yelps when she is touched in these areas, this is likely a sign that something is painful - even if she doesn't react when you examine her afterwards. She may have a pinched nerve, a herniated or "slipped" disc, or arthritis pain that could be causing her to do this. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do x-rays if needed to help determine the problem and can also prescribe pain medication for her to help make her more comfortable.

Hello, The first thing that comes to my mind is chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. Dogs with pain in these areas often hesitate to use stairs or jump on and off furniture. They may also want to lay around more and be generally less active. Pain in dogs can be similar to humans in that in can be caused by things like arthritis, disc disease, or a pinched nerve. It can also flare up and be worse at some times than at others, which may be why he vocalizes at some times and not at others. Anti-inflammatory drugs (a common one is carprofen) and nerve pain drugs (a common one is gabapentin) are commonly used to treat these conditions. Sorry to here that Kemo is having some troubles. There are many things that can cause pain in dogs. Some of them include trauma, degenerative diseases, inflammatory conditions, spinal issues, cancers, clotting disorders, and some others that are less common. In a small breed dog of about six years, my top two differentials would be some sort of traumatic event (that could have happened when you were not around) or an issue with the back. Many times when dogs are lifted and they yelp, it is a spinal problem causing some pretty severe discomfort. If you have ever had back pain yourself, you know just how uncomfortable this can be. Based on the severity and progression of the problems, I would say that Kemo definitely needs a visit to the vet sometime soon. They will be able to perform a thorough physical, and based on the findings, determine if x-rays are warranted. They will be able to target what part of the body requires x-rays. There are many medications available to treat inflammatory conditions and trauma, as well as pain associated with the back and spine. I hope you are able to work through things with your vet to resolve Kemo's pain.
