My senior dog's tooth fell out and won't stop bleeding. What to do?

A tooth falling out is definitely a concern and a sign of severe dental disease. While it is not an emergency tonight, I would recommend an evaluation by a veterinarian as he will likely need anesthesia for a full dental cleaning, dental x-rays and extractions of any diseased teeth.

I recommend making an appointment with your vet when they open to take a look at it. Though she isn’t acting painful, it may become painful or infected. There isn’t anything you can do at home and no safe medications you can give for pain. If it is broken, she will likely need to undergo anesthesia to have the tooth removed. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If you are able to apply something cold to that area it will help slow the bleeding down. I would recommend a cold pack for 10 to 15 minutes 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. I would also feed only soft food. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! Oh my. At this age your pet shouldn't have too much dental disease to cause bleeding gums. This is definitely not normal and I worry that Abdul may either have a bleeding disorder (which can only be diagnosed and treated through your vet) or there may be multiple cuts in the mouth from something sharp your pet recently chewed on. I would highly recommend taking Abdul in to your vet to have them examine the mouth asap since a bleeding disorder is a possibility here. If there are cuts in the mouth that is causing this, then an oral rinse and oral pet friendly anti-inflammatory medicaiton will likely be prescribed. Constant bleeding from the gums is not normal and not that easy to stop. It could be a bleeding disorder or a gum/teeth condition, it needs to be checked by a vet, if it's a tooth that is causing this, or something that is stuck in the gums, your dog will need to be put under sedation in order to solve this issue.

Poor Osi! Apply gentle pressure if he will let you to try to stop the bleeding. Take him into the vet first thing in the morning, and don't feed him in the morning. The vet will likely need to sedate him to remove the broken tooth, and he needs an empty stomach to be sedated safely. Best of luck.

If there is any bleeding, this should be ideally stopped by applying gentle pressure on it with a wet swab. A check up would be ideal if unsure there is a piece of it still inside and make sure there is no infection on that site that would require an antibiotic treatment.
