My senior dog has thick, yellow eye discharge. What should I do?

I recommend cleaning this daily with a hot warm cloth to remove the discharge. Then when you have the area clean apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the area below the eyes. That will help heal the skin and stop the discharge from sticking to the skin and fur. I would have Babygurl's eyes checked by your veterinarian. This looks like she has dry eyes, which is a decrease in normal tear production. With this condition the eye discharge is thick and sticky like this. There is medication for dry eyes which will increase the tear production. Dry eyes can be painful and she may irritate the corneas causing reduced vision without treatment, so please have her checked soon. Eye problems like this need prompt attention because there is a risk of permanent damage or even vision loss the longer it goes without treatment. Because of this, I would recommend taking Diesel to an emergency vet today - he/she can examine his eye and use a special stain if needed to check for an ulcer or other injury, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the problem depending on what is found.

These signs can indicate a corneal ulcer or abrasion as a result of the trauma. However, if he does not seem bothered by the eye and the discharge is improving, you can continue monitoring it for changes through the weekend. In the meantime, out an Elizabethan collar or cone on Archie to prevent any further damage. Avoid putting anything in the eye, but you can use warm water to clean the discharge from under his eye.

Hello, sorry to hear about Winnie. It can be associated with an infected tear duct, a foreign object (foxtail) in the vicinity of his eye or tear ducts, and much less likely a tooth root infection. Winnie should be evaluated by a veterinarian. A sedated exam may be best to fully examine his oral cavity, tear ducts and eyes. Please monitor him for any pain, squinting, nasal discharge, or worsening ocular discharge and have him evaluated sooner if you note any of these. Hope this helps and best of luck.
