Senior dog snorting while lying down with a raspy bark. Is it serious?

Hi there! I would recommend having this checked out by your vet when you're able to. A wheezing sound in the throat, hoarseness, and/or a raspy quality to her panting or breathing are all concerning for something interfering with normal air flow in the back of her throat. This could be due to laryngeal paralysis, a growth or tumor, a foreign body, or something simple like a respiratory infection causing some swelling or inflammation in this area. Your vet can do a complete oral exam under sedation if needed to get a better look at her throat, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing to help check for abnormalities.

Hi. It sounds like he is having respiratory signs. This could be from many things such as....upper respiratory infection, cardiac disease, primary respiratory disease, cancers, or other infectious causes. With his age, he needs a full exam, labs, and chest x-rays. If he is in respiratory distress, you will want to go to the ER.

I would get her in to see your vet. Since the snoring and breathing noise is a recent development, it could mean she has a tumor or polyp somewhere in her upper respiratory tract that is causing the problem. Catching it early is the best for a good outcome.

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned that your dog has fluid in her chest and her lungs. This is usually the result of heart disease which is not uncommon in an older dog like Sufii. Other causes of fluidy sounding breathing can be something like pneumonia. My best recommendation would be to take her to your veterinarian where she can listen to her heart and lungs and see if they sound normal. Since Mae Rose is congested or having a harder breathing, it is best to get her seen by a vet. It may be a respiratory or sinus infection and could possibly involve her teeth. Or at her age, an underlying heart disease can cause a change in their breathing pattern. It is good that she has a normal appetite, as infections and lack of smelling due to congestion can alter their appetite.

Hopefully it's nothing but anytime you notice a change in the breathing character, you should pay attention. I advise to make an appointment with your veterinarian who will listen to her heart and lungs as well as check her throat for any abnormalities. In a dog Bailey's age, yes there is a chance it could be heart failure . You will need to take her into the vet now. The vet can do a physical exam and x-rays to see how her heart is working, and if she is in heart failure, the vet can prescribe medication to manage her symptoms. Best of luck.
