My dog snores loudly, breathes noisily, and sleeps more. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 9 months old | 30 lbs

Hi, my dog makes noises when breathing and I also notice that she snores loud now it been like this for about three weeks. She still plays a lot and barks still but on other hands she sleeps more then before.

I would get her in to see your vet. Since the snoring and breathing noise is a recent development, it could mean she has a tumor or polyp somewhere in her upper respiratory tract that is causing the problem. Catching it early is the best for a good outcome.

She could have a respiratory infection. Since she is wheezing and breathing loudly, she should be examined by a veterinarian to determine the exact cause and best treatment. Your vet may need to take an x-ray to evaluate her lungs to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia and then prescribe medications to help treat her problem. She may need an antibiotic, bronchodilator, anti-inflammatory, or other medications. Hope she feels better soon!

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection or possibly to a rhinitis (inflammatory, allergic, infective). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.

I advise to make an appointment with your veterinarian who will listen to her heart and lungs as well as check her throat for any abnormalities. If Bruno is unable to breathe, gasping for air, choking, or his gums/tongue or turning blue or pale, this is a medical emergency and care should be sought at your local vet or ER vet ASAP. Some breeds of dog may snore more often, or have trouble breathing. Problems such as asthma, sinus issues, illness, structural problems of the nose or sinuses, etc can all cause difficulty breathing. If this is happening repeatedly, scheduling a veterinary exam is best to rule out any more serious causes and get Bruno some relief.

Why is my dog suddenly breathing heavy, snorting, and has bad breath?

Bad breath is usually due to teeth and gum disease. If Precious has not had dental treatment before, then this is definitely a possibly. This often happens with breeds of dogs that have short/smashed-appearing muzzles. It can happen due to various structural deformities such as small nostril size, or an elongated soft palate. If this is something that suddenly started, then I would be more worried about laryngeal paralysis, or a polyp causing her to have obstructed breathing. Given the multiple possibilities and the likely need for treatment, I recommend you have Precious examined by a veterinarian. They can quickly narrow-down the cause of the bad breath and snoring.
