My senior dachshund has raspy breathing and feels warm. Is it serious?

It is hard to say the exact cause of her breathing. I would be concerned about a possible upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, heart disease, heartworm disease or pain. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for a good listen to her chest and possible chest x-rays.

Hopefully it's nothing but anytime you notice a change in the breathing character, you should pay attention. I advise to make an appointment with your veterinarian who will listen to her heart and lungs as well as check her throat for any abnormalities. It really depends on the situation. They can breathe fast normally with exercise, excitation and an increase in environmental temperature. If you are sure that none of those are a factor and her breathing rate has definitely increased from normal, then it could be due to a problem affecting the heart, lungs, or red blood cells. In this case it's best to have her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to prevent further complications. Poor Roxey. The changing of seasons can certainly cause these guys to get some congestion. Unfortunately since Roxey is older, I would take her to your vet for an exam. She could have a simple upper respiratory infection or something more serious like the canine flu, heart disease, or even pneumonia. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs. Your vet can also do blood work or chest X-rays if needed and provide the proper medicine to help make her feel better. Unfortunately there isn’t a good OTC medicine to help her feel better. You can try 75 mg (3 adult tablets) of Benadryl twice a day until you can get her to the vet. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better really soon.

It could be Mick has a respiratory infection or he could have heart disease. Unfortunately heart disease can be common in senior dogs. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning for a health check. Best of luck.

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned that your dog has fluid in her chest and her lungs. This is usually the result of heart disease which is not uncommon in an older dog like Sufii. Other causes of fluidy sounding breathing can be something like pneumonia. My best recommendation would be to take her to your veterinarian where she can listen to her heart and lungs and see if they sound normal. I am so sorry your older dog Miss Mattie is experiencing breathing issues and also seem uncomfortable. These symptoms are very worrisome and b/c of the breathing problems alone, I highly recommend having her seen by your vet right away. She could have a number of things going on including: heart disease, an infection, bronchitis, or even just pain from an internal organ issue. We need more information and testing to determine what the underlying problem is so that we can best help her moving forward.
