My senior dog's eyes are red and shut. Can I use colloidal silver?

At least in these pictures, his cornea appears affected. I highly recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hey there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. What you are seeing is a condition called Chemosis (swelling of the conjunctiva). This can be caused from trauma, insect bites, allergic reactions, etc. If this does not resolve after 24 hours, I would have Charlie examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear about Lizzy! The good news is that this sounds like this is more likely a corneal scratch or ulcer than glaucoma. (Probably happened when crashing through the wood pile.) If you have one or can get one from a pet store, put an E-collar on Lizzi to protect it from further damage (scratching/rubbing at the eye). Then get in to see your vet tomorrow. They may recommend a special stain to confirm this idea and will prescribe an eye ointment or drop to help. Best of luck to you and Lizzy!

However, there are some other diseases that really need a very thorough evaluation of the eye to diagnose. I think that if he has not improved on the current therapy, it may be a good idea to check in with your veterinarian. If they are concerned based on their knowledge of his case, they could consider having you consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist. Red eyes with discharge in dogs can be due to a variety of reasons, including allergies, an eye infection, a scratched cornea, dry eye, or another underlying issue. While antibiotic drops may help with some of these, they may not fix it depending on what the cause is. I would recommend Eddie be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his eye issue, have any necessary testing done (eye stain, pressure check, tear production check) and what medications (if any) he may need. What type of testing has been done? My concerns at am that age for red eyes with a discharge would be glaucoma and KCS with a secondary infection. Your vet can check the pressures for glaucoma. There is a test that can tell how many tears she produces in a minute and if it is too low then she has chronic dry eye or KCS. Often times there is a secodnary infection due to the chronic dry eye. Both glaucoma and KCS require life long management with eye drops to control symptoms and there is more than one medication to try as everyone responds differently. oral steriods or antibiotics may be needed initial to get it under control the fastest but generally are not needed long term
