Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

The blood could be coming from the tumor itself, or sometimes dogs with tumors are more likely to develop urinary tract infections. If she is also straining to urinate it may be that her quality of life is beginning to be affected. Before you make any decisions you should recheck with your vet. They could check her urine for bacteria and can also discuss what signs to look for that might indicate it is time to consider euthanasia.

There is a chance that he has developed bladder cancer. I would recommend having an abdominal ultrasound to visualize his entire urinary tract to look for any abnormalities. There is limited scientific data available for CBD oil in pets. Studies are just starting to look at the use of CBD for arthritis in dogs and seizure control, but nothing has been published yet. At this point there is no known information on appropriate dosing. So I'm afraid I cannot tell you if it might make any difference. Because of this lack of data, most veterinarians are not comfortable recommending the use of CBD, but some owners try it anyway. Hopefully she has also been tested for a urinary tract infection, as it is very common for them to develop infections when they have bladder tumors. If this has not been done, you may want to discuss the possibility with your veterinarian, and evaluate a urine sample for signs of infection. I am so sorry to hear about Tilly. Unfortunately with many of these tumors surgical removal is the only way to fix the problem. If that isn't an option right now, in some instances depending on type of tumor placing the pet on prednisone may decrease the size but can have negative side effects (panting, increases urinating). Another consideration if the tumor is bleeding is a traditional Chinese medicine called Yunnan Baiyao. I would ask your vet if these are options for your dog.
