Why is my senior dog pawing at a painful spot under his ear?

Hi there. These look a lot like lick granumlomas-if Max has been licking the areas and chewing at them a lot them the areas will become hairless and infected and eventually form granulation (which is thicker) tissue than normal. Sometimes the areas will weep clear fluid which is plasma leakage. I would still encourage you to see your veterinarian who can palpate (feel the area) and make sure there is no worry of an actual tumor. If max is 11, he is an older pet for sure, but may have several years of good quality life in front of him still. Hope this helps

Poor Scrappy. It is difficult to see details as the picture is blurry. It almost looks like a mass in the picture. I would make she isn't licking or scratching it. I would put a cone collar on her to prevent the licking if needed. I would also have your vet take a look at it. With how red and ulcerated it is, she likely needs some antibiotics and may need to have it removed. I hope this helps.

This sounds like an area of moist exudative dermatitis, commonly known as a "hot spot." They frequently show up in front of the ear, just as you're describing. Unfortunately yes, these are painful, and they are very difficult if not impossible to treat at home. Chunk needs pain relief to help with the severe inflammation in this area, and also antibiotics to clear up the infection. I'd really urge you to get this treated sooner rather than later, as it's intensely uncomfortable, and there's really not anything you can do at home to treat it.

This growth needs to be checked and analysed as there are many conditions and types of tumors that could look like that. take Bruce to the vet, they will perform a fine needle aspiration on the growth and send it to the lab for analysis. when the result comes, the vet will advise what needs to be done according to the diagnosis.

You can use some hydrogen peroxide diluted 1/2 and 1/2 with water and try to clean the crusts off it and, if possible, shave the hair from around it. It would be best to have it looked at as soon as you can him examined. It may just be a cyst but it could also be an abscess or a tumor. I'm glad it is not bothering him but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not something worse than just a cyst.
