What to do for a senior dog's open, infected, bleeding fatty lump?

Poor guy. This does not appear to be just a lipoma (fatty tumor). I would highly recommend having Allie seen by your vet to get this tumor surgically removed and sent off for lab analysis to determine if this is a cancerous mass or a benign one. Hopefully it is benign and nothing to be worried about. The vet will likely place Allie on some antibiotics and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication first to get the skin to calm down before surgical removal is done. But surgery is the best and often-times only option when a mass has gotten this large and has ulcerated. Until you can get her in, its best to clean this mass with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it from getting infected. Then rinsing with sterile saline from your local pharmacy. Poor girl. Because this mass is open and seems to be bothering her I would highly consider having this mass removed surgically. Sometimes if the mass is small (less than 2 cm's) we can do a sedative on the pet and quickly remove these. However if it is a larger mass then general anesthesia may be required. She also needs to be placed on oral antibiotics to keep this area from getting infected and daily cleaning of the mass as well. Sterile saline flushes can help keep this area relatively clean and then an e-collar placed on her can help prevent licking. If surgery isn't an option for you, then medical management with antibiotics, e-collar and regular cleanings may allow proper healing of the area, but in most cases surgical removal is the best option. Poor Gidget! Without being able to see it in person, it is difficult to say for sure. I would have your vet take a look at it since it is hairless. It is likely just a fatty tumor but I have seen a malignant type of skin tumor called a mast cell tumor look like that. Granted, we do have to keep in mind her age. You may decide just to keep her comfortable and make sure the area doesn't get infected and that isn't a wrong decision either. Your vet will be able to determine whether or not it is malignant and also make sure the part that is bleeding isn't going to get infection. A dog her age would have a hard time getting over an infection if left untreated. I hope this helps!

Many mammary tumours shrink temporarily after antibiotics as they often become infected in the centre, intact bitches can also develop mastitis which responds to antibiotics also. I would be concerned the bloodied discharge could be related to a womb infection and would recommend an ultrasound to rule this out. Bleeding around the eye is a warning flag for lymphoma but can occur secondary to many inflammatory conditions, referral to an ophthalmologist would be worthwhile in order to explore all avenues

make sure Zeus cannot lick or scratch the area. He may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times or a shirt if he wants to scratch it. Otherwise I recommend to leave it alone. If you are noticing an odor, it's might be infected. This bump could be an infected cyst, a foreign body trapped under the skin or a ruptured tumor. I recommend to protect the area from any licking (Nala may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times) and have her examined by the veterinarian within the next 24 hours. I hope this helps.
