My dog's huge fatty tumor is bleeding. What should I do about it?

My dog has a fatty tumor. And now it's huge and spotting blood. A little. What can be done

Poor guy. This does not appear to be just a lipoma (fatty tumor). I would highly recommend having Allie seen by your vet to get this tumor surgically removed and sent off for lab analysis to determine if this is a cancerous mass or a benign one. Hopefully it is benign and nothing to be worried about. The vet will likely place Allie on some antibiotics and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication first to get the skin to calm down before surgical removal is done. But surgery is the best and often-times only option when a mass has gotten this large and has ulcerated.
Until you can get her in, its best to clean this mass with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it from getting infected. Then rinsing with sterile saline from your local pharmacy.

Poor Allie. It is difficult to tell from the picture but this could be a mass that has ruptured and now bleeding or a wound. I would try to hold pressure on it and even an ice pack if possible. Depending on its location you can even use some gauze and bandage material to wrap it. Just be sure to not wrap it tightly. Finally, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to determine the cause of the bleeding and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. If it is a tumor, they may recommend surgical removal to prevent this from happening again. If it is a deep wound, they may recommend sutures to help it heal. I hope this helps.

My dog has a large, bleeding tumor on her leg. What should I do?

That is a very large tumor that has likely outgrown its blood supply and is opening up. You can’t tell what type of tumor it is without aspirating the cells. At this point, the best option is to remove the tumor but it’s so large that this may be difficult but not impossible. My senior dog's neck lump is bleeding. Is it dangerous or a lipoma?

Poor Gidget! Without being able to see it in person, it is difficult to say for sure. I would have your vet take a look at it since it is hairless. It is likely just a fatty tumor but I have seen a malignant type of skin tumor called a mast cell tumor look like that. Granted, we do have to keep in mind her age. You may decide just to keep her comfortable and make sure the area doesn't get infected and that isn't a wrong decision either. Your vet will be able to determine whether or not it is malignant and also make sure the part that is bleeding isn't going to get infection. A dog her age would have a hard time getting over an infection if left untreated. I hope this helps!

My old dog's non-cancerous lump is bleeding and red. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Piper! The only way we can 100% know for sure a mass isn't cancerous is by either aspirating the mass with a needle or biopsying it. When a mass changes I always recommend that the animal be seen by their Vet to have it checked. The fact the mass opened up dictates the need to have it looked at and a minimum of antibiotics started. Hopefully it is just a ruptured follicular cyst that is infected. But I think you should have the mass removed and biopsied. I am afraid it will not heal well and continually leak bloody fluid. I hope this helps and I wish Piper the best!

My dog's long-standing fatty tumor now has sores. What should I do?

It looks like that growth has ulcerated, meaning the skin has become too thin and weak because of growth of the mass and is starting to break in places. It needs to be removed surgically at this point. When it's removed, it can also be sampled to determine what sort of mass it is and if further treatment is needed. It could definitely be a fatty tumor still. It's also possible to get incorrect results from a fine need aspirate, so it could be something else. My dog's fat deposit on her back ruptured. What should I do?

It is very likely this mass has changed from a lipoma (fatty deposit) to another kind of mass. For now its best to just clean it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with water, and then get your vet to either sample the mass again or go ahead with surgical removal of the mass.
