My senior unspayed dog has a lump, eye, and vulva bleeding. Why?

Poor Lady Bug. Since she is not fixed, my biggest concern is cancer. She could have mammary tumors - approximately 50% are benign and the other 50% are malignant. Whether you are talking about her vulva or anus, she could have a mass on the inside that has grown its way toward the orifice so that you can now see them. These can also be benign or malignant but I would strongly recommend to have a vet look at her. Your vet will be able to help you come up with a plan that will best suit you and Lady Bug’s needs and help make her feel better. Your vet will also be able to determine whether surgery is the best option for her or if there are other options depending on what the vet thinks it is. I hope this helps!

The masses under the skin can be due to a benign or malignant growth. Both of these conditions can be linked or be completely separate issues. A urinalysis and urine culture can be performed to check the urine. Abdominal imaging may also be recommended. The lumps could be benign or malignant growths. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Yes, I would be worried about Loca. In a senior dog, a large lump could potentially be a malignant tumor. Bloody nipples are also not normal, and she could have hurt herself or may have mammary tumors causing the bloody nipples. Best thing to do is have her seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing the lump and bloody nipples, and can discuss treatment options with you. Good luck, I hope this helps!

an open and infected tumor should be removed. If it happens to be a lipoma (fatty lump) then this should be curative. If it happens to be another type of tumor, then your vet should do an x-ray of the lungs to check whether there are metastases. I think you should get a second opinion from another veterinarian or a veterinary oncologist.

It is very hard to say what the lump is without examining your dog and possibly taking a sample of the lump for pathology. It is possible that the lump is a mammary gland tumour (benign or malignant) but it really does not often happen in such young dogs. All you need to do at the moment is to keep the wound clean and make sure that Aubrey does not lick it. Once your vet is open, you need to take your dog for an appointment.

Sorry to hear that Honey isn't right. I would want to know if that vet only analyzed the discharge or actually obtained a needle aspirate of the mass itself. While analyzing the discharge is fine, it is not going to be as accurate or meaningful as obtaining a sample of the mass. The most effective way to find out what is happening would be removing the affected area and sending it out for a biopsy. If it is an abscess or some sort of cyst, it would be curative hopefully. If it ended up being malignant in some way, they may have to go back and remove the entire mammary chain. Mammary cancer would be pretty unusual but certainly not impossible for a four year old dog. Ouch, looks painful! As there is a hole in the lump that appears ruptured it's possible it may be an abscess that has ruptured, or may be a growth in the process of rapidly changing. Since the wound is so large and actively bleeding it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP to have the site looked at, treated and medications such as antibiotics given to help facilitate healing.
