My dog's fat deposit on her back ruptured. What should I do?

an open and infected tumor should be removed. If it happens to be a lipoma (fatty lump) then this should be curative. If it happens to be another type of tumor, then your vet should do an x-ray of the lungs to check whether there are metastases. I think you should get a second opinion from another veterinarian or a veterinary oncologist.

Poor guy. This does not appear to be just a lipoma (fatty tumor). I would highly recommend having Allie seen by your vet to get this tumor surgically removed and sent off for lab analysis to determine if this is a cancerous mass or a benign one. Hopefully it is benign and nothing to be worried about. The vet will likely place Allie on some antibiotics and pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication first to get the skin to calm down before surgical removal is done. But surgery is the best and often-times only option when a mass has gotten this large and has ulcerated. Until you can get her in, its best to clean this mass with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it from getting infected. Then rinsing with sterile saline from your local pharmacy. It looks like that growth has ulcerated, meaning the skin has become too thin and weak because of growth of the mass and is starting to break in places. It needs to be removed surgically at this point. When it's removed, it can also be sampled to determine what sort of mass it is and if further treatment is needed. It could definitely be a fatty tumor still. It's also possible to get incorrect results from a fine need aspirate, so it could be something else. Poor Tinker! Some lipomas (fatty tumors) can become fixed, but yes general they are movable. Unfortunately, being fixed to the underlying tissue is a common characteristic of malignant tumors. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by your vet. Your vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, your vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I recommend taking Tinker into your vet today or first thing tomorrow.

If your veterinarian has not done a fine needle aspirate with cytology or a full thickness biopsy of the lumps, he is only speculating as to what they are. Without seeing the lumps myself, it is difficult for me to assess what they may or may not be. However, in my experience, usually fatty masses don't tend to leak sticky clear fluid regularly, I would ask that he samples the fluid in order to best figure out what they are if you would like to find out. Otherwise, if they are not getting larger, not causing Bruiser any harm of discomfort, and are not ulcerating, you don't have to necessarily do anything with them. But, for a young dog like Bruiser, I would be very curious as to what is going on. It would be very unusual for a 1 year old dog to develop 15-20 fatty masses. This is usually something we associate with senior dogs.

This could be a seroma from an injury, a cyst, abscess or a tumor. Cysts and abscesses need to be drained by a vet. If your vet suspects a tumor, he will do a fine needle aspirate to determine whether it is a harmless lipoma, which does not need to be removed unless it is ulcerating or bothers the dog due to its location or size, or another tumor that needs to be removed. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. What i am seeing in the pictures is likely a sebaceous cyst that ruptured. These are common with older dogs and are benign. When these rupture there is a chance they will become infected so the best treatment is to have it removed to prevent this from happening.
