Senior dog incontinent, weak legs, pain, licking bum. What can I do?

From the clinical signs you are describing I would b considered mostly with pain in the lower abdomen. This combined with loss of control go urinary function could indicate an infection or inflammation of the bladder. I would advise a trip to the vet for a urineanalysis to diagnose. Hello and thank you for posting your concerns regarding Genie. Genie is quite the old man! 10.5yrs old is a great age for a dog his size. With the description you have provided me with, it sounds like Genie is dealing with a lot of age related problems. There are multiple things you can do to try and help Genie out with any arthritic pain he may be experiencing. As for the weakness in the hind end, this may be due to muscle loss which is most likely due to him not using his legs as much as he used to. Managing his level of pain and getting him back on his feet may help re-establish some of this muscle loss but in my experience, there will most likely always be a degree of muscle atrophy due to the chronicity of the arthritis. I would consult with your veterinarian to discuss options as most of them you will need to get from your vet to manage the arthritis. Some options to start considering that you can start now at least would be the following: 1. Welactin omega 3 fish oil for canines 2. Dasuquin glucosamine for canines 3. Toe grips (if you have solid tile or wood floors) 4. Help 'em up Harness to help get Genie up easier (easier on your back!) Your veterinarian may want to start long term anti-inflammatory drugs as well as the above therapy. Some options your vet may consider would be Carprofen, Tramadol, Gabapentin, Amantadine, etc. to manage the level of pain. You can also consider administering Adequan. It sounds like Lucy is in pain, poor girl! Yelping, lack of appetite, and decreased movement are all signs of pain in dogs. It's very possible she sprained or strained something, like her back or a limb, and this is her way of telling you. I'm glad the Cosequin seemed to help her, but in general, Cosequin is not a pain reliever; it's a joint supplement that provides nutritive support to cartilage, joint capsules, and joint fluid, and it's an excellent product, so I do recommend you keep Lucy on this consistently. However, I think she needs some more aggressive pain management and a check-up with your vet to make sure she hasn't seriously injured herself. Especially if her back is painful, as that can sometimes involve pinched nerves. If she has a history of bladder stones and is having inappropriate urination, that definitely needs to be evaluated as well. When you go in to have her pain assessed, bring a urine sample with you for your vet to check. It may be something as simple as a urinary tract infection or it could be a recurrence of bladder stones, but it's worth getting checked out. Good luck and I hope Lucy feels better soon!

I would have your veterinarian evaluate Daphane's urine in case she has another urinary tract infection (UTI). That can cause an increase in water intake, urgency to urinate and burning while urinating or leaking urine. It would also be a good idea to check some bloodwork. Hopefully all that's going on is a UTI and some antibiotics will have her back to normal shortly. Good luck!

NSAIDs are often useful for dogs without kidney or liver disease. You may also ask about pain medications like Gabapentin, amantadine, or pregabalin.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that you're having these issues with Honey. Scooting his rear end on the rug is often a sign of impacted anal glands, or intestinal parasites. Brown gunk and a foul smell to the ears usually indicates a yeast or bacterial ear infection. Increased urination and accidents in the house can be caused by diabetes, Cushing's disease, chronic kidney disease, or a bladder issues such as stones or a UTI. All of these problems will require treatment by a veterinarian, so I would recommend taking Honey in for an exam. He/she can do some diagnostic testing if needed to help determine what all is going on with him and get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

Poor Lulu! If she has been checked for underlying problems that could cause incontinence (such as diabetes, Cushing's disease, or chronic kidney disease), then I agree that it's likely her incontinence is due to being an older spayed female. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about medication to control this condition, such as Proin or DES (diethylstilbestrol) - these are quite effective at managing incontinence in most cases :)
