Senior dog has enlarged testicles, swollen legs, and high WBC. Is it cancer?

It is certainly possible. Prostatitis is very common in intact male dogs, especially GSD. The prostate enlargement may be benign but it may also be cancerous or a bacterial infection. Unfortunately prostate problems are very common in intact male dogs, and there is a chance he could have prostate cancer. Without seeing Cooper in person, I can't say for sure what his chances are that it's cancer, but it certainly would be a differential for me in in a senior, intact dog. Dogs are also very stoic about pain and illness, and a lot of times they are quite ill before showing any outward signs. That means they can be acting fine one day, and then be quite ill the next day. Keep in mind as well that just because you don't see visible blood in his urine, it doesn't mean blood isn't present in microscopic amounts. The next steps would be a urine analysis, abdominal x-rays and/or ultrasound to visualize the prostate, and a prostate biopsy. These tests will help confirm if Cooper has cancer, and I would speak to your vet about doing them. I hope this helps!

Poor Storm! It's hard to say for sure what might be causing this without seeing him. From what you describe, I would be concerned that he may have a testicular infection or even testicular cancer. If his belly looks swollen, this is often a sign of fluid in the abdomen, which can be caused by cancer, liver failure, heart disease, or internal bleeding. It does sounds like this is a serious problem, so I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away - he/she can do blood work and x-rays to help determine the problem and see what can be done to help him.

Poor Oscar! His scrotum does look quite swollen and sore. Yes, unfortunately this could definitely be caused by testicular cancer, as this is a fairly common problem in older intact male dogs. He could also have an infection of the scrotum or testicles causing this swelling. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked as soon as you are able to. He/she can take a biopsy if needed to help determine exactly what's going on, and may recommend surgical removal if cancer is suspected.

Hi, an enlarged prostate is very very very common in unneutered dogs, one study demonstrated that over 80% of entire male dogs over the age of 5 are affected and 100% over the age of 8 have some degree of benign hyperplasia.I don’t think biopsies are compulsory, I would personally opt to have it treated as benign hyperplasia either through castration or through medical management, i.e. an anti-androgen injection that determines a reduction in prostate size of 40 % within two weeks and lasts an average of 5-6 months. The vomiting and diarrhoea is probably not linked to the prostate, and I would first try to help Harvey with this problem and then think about his prostate that has probably been enlarged for a while. Hello. Swollen testicles with progrssive swelling in the pelvic limb(s) might be an indication of infection, inflammation or even neoplasia. You really should have this evaluated as soon as possible on the chance that he may need to be on antibiotics or need to be neutered. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Cutler isn’t feeling well. Without seeing him it’s very hard to say what’s going on and how to treat him. I do recommend he is seen by a vet to determine what’s going on. Being an older, intact male, I would be worried about something going on in his testicles or prostate. In the meantime, you could try applying a cold compress to his scrotum for 10-15 minutes a few times today to see if that helps with the swelling. After 24 hours, I would switch to a warm compress (not hot). If that doesn’t improve, I would recommend an exam. Good luck and kisses to Cutler!
