My senior dog has a red, peeling nose and new bumps. What's wrong?

A couple of things come to mind as possibilities. This could be an acute hypersensitivity reaction to something - bug bite/sting, perhaps - or possibility a severe bacterial infection called furunculosis. There are also some immune-mediated/auto-immune diseases that attack the top of the nose. See your vet about this. An appropriate treatment plan might be to start antibiotics and if no improvement after 2 weeks consider a biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

It sounds like Charlie needs to be examined by the veterinarian. Those spots and the lesions on the muzzle could be several things including ringworm (which humans can get) allergies to something in the environment, food allergy or endocrine disease. Each one of these problems is detected and addressed differently and I recommend to discuss with your veterinarian which one to start hunting down first. Ringworm is diagnosed at the vet's office by examined the hairs. Food allergy is best ruled out with a diet trial using a hydrolyzed protein. Endocrine diseases are detected with blood work. Environmental allergies are a little more difficult to detect but a response to therapy or a blood test can give an indication. Once you figure out and address the underlying cause, the lesions should not come back. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Charlie wear an elizabethan collar at all times if he is trying to lick or scratch the lesions. There could be a couple of things going on with Ben. The dry, cracked, and bleeding nose could be due to allergies, such as to plastic. Losing weight despite eating could be due to a medical issue, such as diabetes or kidney disease. The growths by his ears could be benign tumors, but in older dogs, there's always a chance it could be caused by malignant tumors. I would take Ben into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) on the growths to diagnose the causes of his various symptoms. To do an FNA, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform.

It is hard to tell without seeing it in person, but pimple like bumps often indicate an infection like a pyoderma. Sometimes medicated shampoo can be enough to get rid of the bumps, but other times they need oral antibiotics. I would recommend making sure he is on a good flea prevention and speaking with your vet about the possibility of a skin infection. I hope this helps!

That are certainly weird looking! Depending on when those lesions started and if they seem to be itchy, my presumptive diagnosis might differ considerably. It is possible that Cami might have been sticking in muzzle in an area that she shouldn't have been, resulting in some sort of irritation, and the lesions you currently see. They do definitely appear to be red, inflamed, and possibly infected based on the picture. Another possibility is that there is an immune-mediated condition that could be the cause of this. There is a disease known as Pemphigus that is known to cause skin lesions near the nose. I would definitely take Cami into the vet to have these areas assessed, and have some preliminary diagnostics run on the affected portions of the skin. Hope this helps!

Aww poor Grizzlu that must be very painful! That looks like very severe dermatitis. Some causes of this are bacterial and fungal infections, autoimmune disease, severe allergies, mites and even cancer. Please take Grizzlu to see a veterinarian as soon as you can. Whatever caused this it looks like it is now infected and she likely need antibiotics, topical treatment and possible other oral medications like corticosteroids.

Yes, at this point, Cosmo should take a trip to the vet. From the pictures, his skin lesions are highly suspicious for a bacterial skin infection. This may have occurred as a result of matted hair or underlying allergies. If he did well on Dinovet in the past, it may be worth restarting this supplement (double check with your vet first!), but I doubt that this alone will be sufficient to manage these lesions. I hope that he's on the mend soon!
