Senior dog has diarrhea, drinking lots after puppy's hookworm. ER vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 50 lbs

Puppy tested positive for hookworm was given a dewormer but now my senior dog who shares backyard with puppy has had diarrhea for two days. He’s eating normally but drinking a lot of water, we gave him canned pumpkin which seemed to help but his diarrhea has returned. It is Sunday so I cannot take him to his regular vet, should I take him to the emergency vet instead or just administer water and monitor him until his vet opens on Monday?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sentinel is effective against hookworms, so Leon is protected against this parasite. Diarrhea can be caused by gastrointestinal infection, food indiscretion, pancreatitis and more.
Offer Leon bland food for a few days (cooked lean meat with rice or pasta) and get him a probiotic for dogs (for example FortiFlora by Purina).
However, if after a few days he is not any better, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.
Also, monitor the amount of water he drinks. He should be given free access to water but if you notice that he is consistently drinking more than usual, he should have a blood test to check his kidneys function.

She has gastroenteritis, perhaps from eating things in the yard, but regardless of the cause she will get worse if she becomes dehydrated. Why is my dog having loose stools and not drinking after hookworms?

How long ago was she treated for Hookworms? Did she receive a second treatment? Typically with Hookworms two treatments are needed. I would also recommend rechecking a stool to make sure she doesn't have any other type of parasites. Did she get into anything recently or any type of new food? My senior dog has diarrhea but is eating normally. What should I do?

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. My senior dog has diarrhea & vomiting. Is Petco Wellness enough?

I'm so sorry that Bernard is having these problems. It sounds like he needs more diagnostics and treatment than a Petco wellness center can provide. The wellness centers are just for vaccinations and basic wellness testing. Bernard should have more testing than that to determine what is going on the best way to treat it. Older dogs can become sick more quickly than younger dogs, so I would try to have Bernard seen as soon as possible. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Bernard feels better soon. My puppy is throwing up and has diarrhea. Should I call the vet?

Hello, I do not believe the pyrantel from 6 days ago would have any affect on today. Vomiting and diarrhea in a puppy could be commonly caused by infectious disease, such as parvovirus, or an intestinal obstruction, such as a swallowed toy stuck in the intestines. It would be helpful to know if Billy has had all of his vaccinations. I'd recommend an appointment with your vet. They can guide you best after a physical exam. If Billy becomes lethargic or uninterested in food, that would be a sign to get him to a veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helps.
