My puppy is throwing up and has diarrhea. Should I call the vet?

Hi,t hanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dewowmers have the potential to cause an upset stomach such as vomit, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Though I am worried something else is going on since you lost a puppy recently. I worry most about parvo virus in puppies this age, especially if they are yet to be vaccinated. I would have this puppy seen today by your Vet and tested for parvo virus as it is VERY contagious and if it is the cause it will likely affect the entire litter. If it isn't parvo the Vet can at least get this puppy feeling better and prevent dehydration. Good luck!

That sounds like the correct dose of pyrantel. I don't know if Billy is not eating because of taking the pyrantel or not. Some diarrhea while treating for worms is expected. Unless the diarrhea is extremely water I would not overly worried about dehydration especially since he is drinking water. I would, however, be worried about a puppy that doesn't eat for longer than 48 hours. I suggest you call your vet for more advice.

Vomiting and diarrhea have many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. Usually, in puppies, we worry about intestinal parasites, infection (parvo/coronavirus), foreign body ingestion or dietary indiscretion. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. Puppies should be dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age and then every 2-3 weeks. This should be done multiple times and should continue for 3-4 times after weaning. When puppies nurse, they continue to get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother. Good luck

This could be from parvovirus or intestinal parasites. Since he’s so small and young I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. He could get dehydrated quickly and that can become life threatening. They will test him for parvovirus and check for intestinal parasite. They will probably give him fluids to prevent dehydration and medication to control the diarrhea. Puppies commonly get gastrointestinal infections from parasites and bacteria that can cause this to happen. We always worry about Parvo virus in puppies, but it causes bloody stool, so hopefully this won't be the case for Stella. If he is still active and eating/drinking, then this is likely not an emergency, but he should be seen by a vet within the next 24 hours. Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

As long as Tea is feeling fine I'm not overly concerned. Puppies get into lots of things so a day of vomiting and diarrhea can be ok. I'd cut back his food for today, make sure he has water and let him rest like you are doing. If he's not better in the morning then take him right in for an exam. Since he's so small and young if he doesn't improve quickly then treatment is needed so he doesn't get worse. They'll check a fecal sample for intestinal parasites, give medication for the vomiting and diarrhea, and if they feel it's a serious problem they may also do a blood panel, parvovirus test or X-ray.
