My senior Pomeranian has crusty eye gunk and peeling facial skin. Why?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 11 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

My (almost) 12-year-old Pomeranian has recently developed a heavy discharge from her eyes, which dries into a thick, crusty, cement-like gunk. Huge, black, scabby clumps accumulate in the corners and around the edges of both eyes (though one is usually worse). The black rim around her eyes, lips, and nose seems to peel rightoff. She requires regular debriding in these areas! (I wish I could send pic!) I would greatly appreciate your thoughts & suggestions! I so want to help my fur-baby! THANK U!

This may be dry eye or a wider, immune mediated condition similar to pemphigus. I strongly recommend you get her assessed as soon as possible by a vet to investigate her tear production in both eyes and possibly to sample to wound beds on her nose/face to identify the underlying condition and rule out infections in the damaged skin also
