That much discharge in the eye generally means an infection could be brewing. If the discharge has been present for longer than 2 days, I recommend to have Max examined by the veterinarian for treatment. Make sure he is not rubbing at the eye because this could make it worse. Poor Molly! Yes, you should take her to the vet if she is having eye discharge and seems to be rubbing her eye. Molly may have a corneal ulcer, uveitis, or even just allergies causing these issues. I would recommend that Sampson get checked out by a vet. The symptoms you have described could be caused by allergies, infection, corneal ulcer or abrasion, among a few others. You can use an OTC saline eye wash to gently flush the eyes to try to remove any dirt or debris that can be causing irritation. Sampson should also wear an e-collar or cone to prevent damage to the cornea from rubbing and itching. But if the eyes don't look better in the morning he should definitely see a vet. No, there is no way to treat this without seeing a vet, and leaving this untreated can lead to vision loss. A scratch can turn into an ulcer without treatment, and I've seen ulcers causes permanent vision loss including eyes needing to be removed due to the seriousness of one. If the discharge is a yellow or green color and his sclera (white part of the eye) is red and irritated then he probably has an eye infection and is in need of topical antibiotics prescribed by your local veterinarian. This breed is also high risk for "Dry eye" (KCS-keratoconjunctivitis sicca) which will result in clear or white discharge initially, that can later turn to an infection. This condition is diagnosed with a simple tear production test through your vet and then Bear would need prescription medication (i.e. Cylclosporine) +/- artificial tears to treat this. If Bear has other symptoms (i.e. vomiting, decreased appetite, etc) and eye discharge, then this is probably a weepy eye that is secondary to another underlying condition. More information would be needed to know what other conditions may be the cause of his illness. So it is best to schedule an appointment for Bear so that you can get him properly diagnosed and treated for his current eye condition.
