What flea/tick and Heartgard options are safe for my 8-week-old puppy?

I really like Nexgard, which is labeled for 4 lbs and up, and as young as 8 weeks. It should be available from most vets. Hope this helps! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We don’t start heartworm and flea/tick prevention until around 8 week of age. Nexgard is the only oral flea and tick preventative approved in the US for 6 months or younger. I would continue the Nemex every 2 weeks until they start heartworm prevention. I hope this helps!

I have prescribed many doses of Nexgard to dogs and puppies of all sizes and ages. There are no known contraindications with this product so it should be extremely safe to use. Now just remember that all dogs are different and they all don't react to the same products or drugs in the same manner, so it's always possible that you try Nexgard and you notice some problems. This would be uncommon although not out of the question. I would not hesitate to use it on my dogs although right now I use a topical product for fleas/ticks. Just make sure you follow the manufacturers and your veterinarians instructions for administration. Good luck and I hope you and Tikaani are greatly satisfied with Nexgard

You can just go and buy tick and flea treatment for your dog. Make sure it is the right size for his weight. You should think about heart worm treatment also. This will require a heart worm test to make sure he does not have heart worm and then the vet can prescribe the heart worm prevention. Here are some reputable flea and tick medications: Spot-ons: Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, in tablet form for dogs Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

For tear staining in Bichon Frises and other white-coated breeds, there is a product called Angel Eyes that works quite well for many dogs - it's given as a daily chewable treat, and can be ordered online from most pet supply companies. For fleas and ticks, I would recommend Nexgard as the most effective option currently available - it's an oral chewable treat that's given once a month. You will need to get a prescription for this medication from your vet, but it's much more effective than any of the over-the-counter topical "flea drops." Nexgard can be used in puppies as young as 8 weeks, with a minimum weight of 4 pounds. If your puppy is still a bit smaller than this, you could use a topical such as K9 Advantix in the meantime.
