My 8-week Rottweiler puppy has diarrhea for 2+ days, what to do?

My 8 week old Rottweiler has diarrhea for more than 48 hours, what can I do? I’m worried.

Diarrhea for 48 hours in a 8 week old puppy is a concern, as puppies get dehydrated much more quickly than adult dogs, and don't have the same back-up mechanisms to protect blood pressure that adult dogs do.

I recommend you take Mato to a vet.
They will check for parvo-virus, parasites, and other conditions. They will also likely discuss IV fluids, or SQ fluids, and might get you a medication based on the diarrhea, such as a dewormer or a gut protectant.

In puppies, a common cause of diarrhea is intestinal worms. If Carl isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, you will need to get one from the vet. You can also try a home remedy to see if that helps clear up the diarrhea. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, you should take Carl into the vet.

As long as he is behaving normally, try withholding food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet.
Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or abdominal pain. See your veterinarian if any of these symptoms develop or if Ghost does not stop having diarrhea. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth.

How much to bottle feed my 3-week-old Rottweiler with watery poop?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Since you are bottle feeding I would start to wean sooner than if she was nursing from her mom. Milk replacers tend to either constipate or cause diarrhea. Since she is having loose stools I would have a fecal tested at the vet for parasites. Coccidia is common in puppies. By 2 weeks of age you can start dewormning with pyrantel pamoate every 2 weeks. Starting at 4-5 weeks offer canned puppy food and milk replacer twice daily. At 5-6 weeks mix canned with dry puppy food and bottle feed once daily and by 6-7 weeks just dry and off the bottle by then. Once stool a day is not enough. I would buy a different brand of milk replacer and mix with what you are using now to get a better consistency for the stool. 2.5 lbs=40 ounces, so you should be feeding 50 mls every 3-4 hours or 350 mls per day. I would divide that out every 4-6 hours and see how things go and start weaning in the next 1-2 weeks. I hope this helps!

If Chaco is otherwise still active, playful, eating, drinking, and has not been vomiting, I think it is ok to just keep an eye on him for a couple more days. Offer a bland diet (such as plain cooked chicken and white rice) and monitor his appetite and activity level. If he hasn't been dewormed in the past 4 weeks, that would also be advisable. If his stools are not looking more normal in a few days, or if at any point he starts vomiting, acting like he doesn't feel good, or the stool becomes bloody, take him to your vet. This could be due to an infection of the gastrointestinal system. Unfortunately Rottweilers are particularly predisposed to those so an immediate check up would be ideal as antibiotics may be needed. What to do for a 40lb Rottweiler with loose stools, no other issues?

Before medicating your dog, you should discuss it with your veterinarian. Legally, we are prohibited from providing doses for prescription medication in the absence of a physical exam and a patient-veterinarian-client relationship. In the meantime, you can submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Since Max has "simple" diarrhea (no other symptoms), you can try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte during this fast. Begin feeding one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increasing the amount. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with one of the following: boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts, cooked/drained ground beef, cottage cheese or cooked/drained ground turkey. Mix ingredients in a 1:1 ratio. See your veterinarian if the loose stool does not resolve or if Max begins vomiting or develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

My 7-month puppy has diarrhea for days. When should I see a vet?

Poor Morticia! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Morticia starts feeling better quickly! It sounds as Harry is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.
