My puppy's diarrhea came back after reintroducing food. Help!

Diarrhea for 48 hours in a 8 week old puppy is a concern, as puppies get dehydrated much more quickly than adult dogs, and don't have the same back-up mechanisms to protect blood pressure that adult dogs do. I recommend you take Mato to a vet. They will check for parvo-virus, parasites, and other conditions. They will also likely discuss IV fluids, or SQ fluids, and might get you a medication based on the diarrhea, such as a dewormer or a gut protectant. Best of luck with Mato!

Hi and thanks for your question. If the diarrhea starts again after the metronidazole, it could any number of issues. If she was diagnosed with a parasite, like Giardia, or a bacteria, it could be she still has the parasite or bacterial present in her GI and will need another round of metronidazole. That is not totally uncommon. A viral infection may be another possibility as well as a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease. I hope this helped!

These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon possibly secondary to the parasite infection, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. It sounds as Harry is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

In the meantime, you can submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Since Max has "simple" diarrhea (no other symptoms), you can try a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte during this fast. Begin feeding one tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increasing the amount. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to his regular diet. A bland diet can be plain white rice mixed with one of the following: boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts, cooked/drained ground beef, cottage cheese or cooked/drained ground turkey. Mix ingredients in a 1:1 ratio. See your veterinarian if the loose stool does not resolve or if Max begins vomiting or develops lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.
