What vet care does my new rescue dog with dental issues need?

Thank .you for rescuing this dog. She really needs a full veterinary exam so you can find out exactly what she has going on and what the best treatment is going to be. She has many issues going on here at once. It sounds like she needs a dental cleaning. There is medication to help with a weak bladder (although she may have a urinary tract infection and not a weak bladder). There are medications available to treat the eyes depending on what is going on with them. The bald spot could be from fleas, mange mites, yeast/fungal infection, underlying thyroid disease, etc. As you can see there are many issues going on here and we cannot diagnose over the internet or recommend treatment without knowing the underlying cause. If she was neglected she probably has had no vaccinations and deworming - should would need those too. That is what you need to do to help her get healthy.

You will need to start the vaccine protocol over again depending on how long ago Lucky was first vaccinated. She will need a rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age, microchipping, deworming treatment, flea treatment, and heart worm treatment. Make her an appointment with a vet.

If there is no history of vaccinations, I would have the Distemper / Parvo / Adenovirus vaccine administered (this is a yearly vaccine), the bordetella vaccine and his Rabies vaccination. I recommend heartgard for heartworm prevention along with yearly heartworm testing. Heartgard is a monthly chewable tablet give to prevent heartworm disease. If you live in an area where fleas and ticks are prevalent, I would also suggest a flea / tick preventative such as Nexgard or Bravecto. I hope this helps! If you do not have any records the Vet will determine how many DHPP vaccines she will need to protect her. It is in her best interest to receive the vaccines even if she had they before. The Rabies vaccine can be given in most state between 12-16 weeks of age. Your Vet will likely deworm her and get her on a good flea/tick and heartworm prevention. It also is a good idea to ask your veterinarian about a heart worm test and heart worm preventatives, Depending on the condition of his fur, whether it is very matted or just long, clean or dirty, he likely needs a bath with dog shampoo, and then you can take him to a groomer to be groomed or shaved.

It is best to be safe than sorry and it will not hurt him. He should get a Rabies vaccine and two DHPP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart. Both will be good for 1 year. Bring a stool sample and the Vet will also heartworm test him so you can start prevention. You can also discuss setting up his neuter if you plan on fixing him. Thank you for taking care of this dog, He is a sweet looking dog, From the photo he looks like a poodle mix, however your vet will be able to give you a better idea of what breed he is when he does a hands on exam, as he can see the whole dog, size and physique, which is not visible on the photo The same is with estimated age. The vet will also look at his teeth and will be able to tell you whether it is a young dog or an older one , and may be able to pinpoint an age range. If you cannot find out whether he was vaccinated, you can have him vaccinated and wormed at your vet.
