What vaccinations and heartworm prevention for new rescue dog?

He should indeed take monthly heartworm prevention. Your veterinarian will need to do a heartworm test to make sure that Kobi does not have heartworm before he can prescribe the medication. He will need his core vaccinations (at least two courses approx. 3 weeks apart) against Canine parvovirus, distemper, and canine hepatitis. Your vet may think it necessary that Kobi also gets a Leptospirosis vaccination, depending on the area where you live (lots of access to water/river/lake/pond).

It is best to be safe than sorry and it will not hurt him. He should get a Rabies vaccine and two DHPP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart. Both will be good for 1 year. Bring a stool sample and the Vet will also heartworm test him so you can start prevention. You can also discuss setting up his neuter if you plan on fixing him. Your dog will need several vaccines. Most veterinarians give a yearly combo vaccine that includes distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and Corona (DHPPC). He will also need his Rabies vaccine. Rabies can now be given every three years after the initial 1 year vaccine. Other vaccines that I recommend are Canine Bordetella vacine (kennel cough) that is given every 6 or 12 months, and a Leptospirosis vaccine (this vaccine can be added to the combo vaccine or given alone). If your veterinarian offers a Lymes disease vaccine (probably means lymes is prevelant in your area), it would be a good idea to get that one as well. Heartgard and Sentinel are both good options for heartworm prevention - just make sure to check the minimum weight requirements, since I'm not sure how much your puppy weighs. He will also need to be vaccinated against distemper, parvo, and other serious illnesses that are common in puppies, and should also be dewormed if this hasn't been done yet. You should be able to make an appointment with your local vet to have all of these things done - the vet can also prescribe an appropriate heartworm prevention for your pup at that time :)

I would recommend deworming all the puppies. I would not start vaccinating them for another 2 weeks if they are only 1 1/2 months old. They need their DAPP vaccinations every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. They need rabies vaccinations at 16 weeks of age. Depending on your location if youhave Lepto in the area then I would start the Leptospirosis vaccination at 12 weeks of age. For heat worm prevention, I recommend Heartgard Plus. You can get it via prescription from your vet. As for flea treatment, I recommend Advantage or Revolution. They are monthly spot on treatments and are excellent products. You can also get them from your vet's office. I would find a local vet for your dogs so you can get these medications. You will need to start the vaccine protocol over again depending on how long ago Lucky was first vaccinated. She will need a rabies vaccine at 12 weeks of age, microchipping, deworming treatment, flea treatment, and heart worm treatment. Make her an appointment with a vet.
