My new rescue dog has unknown shots and suspected worms. What's next?

Yes, you need to take Dandy to a vet and let them know that you just got him but did not receive any vaccine records. . They will get him started on his vaccines and likely give him a deworming. They will talk to you about what else he may need like heart worm prevention, flea/tick prevention, etc depending on what is prevalent in your area. If there is no history of vaccinations, I would have the Distemper / Parvo / Adenovirus vaccine administered (this is a yearly vaccine), the bordetella vaccine and his Rabies vaccination. I recommend heartgard for heartworm prevention along with yearly heartworm testing. Heartgard is a monthly chewable tablet give to prevent heartworm disease. If you live in an area where fleas and ticks are prevalent, I would also suggest a flea / tick preventative such as Nexgard or Bravecto. I hope this helps! Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend contacting a local veterinarian in your area to have Venom seen for a "new puppy" appointment. At this appointment, the veterinarian will perform an exam, and can make recommendations for first vaccines, flea, tick and heartworm preventatives, as well as appropriate diet and socialization. Dogs require both "distemper" (DAPP) vaccines as well as rabies vaccines. These are the two core vaccines for dogs. These need to be boostered (given again) in 3-4 weeks following the first shot. There are other vaccines such as lyme and leptospirosis that can be considered depending on Venom's potential exposure. I hope this is helpful!

If you do not have any records the Vet will determine how many DHPP vaccines she will need to protect her. It is in her best interest to receive the vaccines even if she had they before. The Rabies vaccine can be given in most state between 12-16 weeks of age. Your Vet will likely deworm her and get her on a good flea/tick and heartworm prevention. He should indeed take monthly heartworm prevention. Your veterinarian will need to do a heartworm test to make sure that Kobi does not have heartworm before he can prescribe the medication. He will need his core vaccinations (at least two courses approx. 3 weeks apart) against Canine parvovirus, distemper, and canine hepatitis. Your vet may think it necessary that Kobi also gets a Leptospirosis vaccination, depending on the area where you live (lots of access to water/river/lake/pond).
