Is feeding raw chicken claws safe for a starving stray dog?

Hello, thank you for your question about Sky. There are many different opinions on feeding raw food diets, so you may hear different opinions depending on who you ask. I would not recommend feeding your dog raw chicken feet. In general feeding raw or even freeze dried food can lead to bacterial infections such as Salmonella. This can be transmitted to humans also. There is no advantage to feeding freeze-dried/raw food over commercial dog food. Hope this helps!

Chicken feet are an excellent source of collagen and glucosamine. They also make great toothbrushes for your dog. As a supplement, feet are a great choice but as the main meal, they would not provide sufficient protein to maintain health and weight.

If Farafero is only eating cooked or raw meat as a diet, he is really missing out on other nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that would be beneficial for him, especially as a diabetic. I would recommend a more balanced diet such as the diet formulated by Hills (Called W/D) or Royal Canin (Glycobalance) you may purchase from your veterinarian. Also, I would try and avoid the raw chicken necks and other raw meats. Raw meats can make cats and dogs ill from being exposed to bacteria in the raw meat and if Farafero has dental and gum disease, the chicken neck may be painful for him to chew on. There is also a human health risk as the people in the household could be exposed my licking or fecal matter. If you want to feed chicken I would encourage you to cook it first. No, it will not harm her. if you feed her with the bones you must NOT cook the chicken, you need to give it raw. in general for teeth hygiene purposes you need to give the chicken raw regardless of the bones.

This e part of the chicken are not easily digested and not very nutrient as well. Occasional gastrointestinal signs due to inflammation can be observed. I would recommend not to give them chicken feet.

You can try feeding him ground beef or pork and see if he will eat more or offer canned dog food. Chicken broth added to the food may entice him more as well. If he is suffering from a disease, unfortunately he may not want to eat because he is so sick. If you are able to report him to an animal rescue, they may be able to catch him and take care of him but I know there are a lot of strays around and you may not be able to find a rescue that would take him in.
