Puppy got wrong vaccine, now has fever & diarrhea. Is it serious?

Oh my. Poor guy. If he has a fever this can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection (i.e. Parvovirus if he isn't fully vaccinated). I would have him tested for parvovirus first and if that comes up negative he needs full panel bloodwork and a urinalysis. to fully evaluate him. He should be on antibiotics and fluid therapy to help bring down his fever. He also needs anti-vomit medication to prevent him from becoming dehydrated due to excessive vomiting. If his condition has not improved within 24-48 hrs, then you should consider having him hospitalized so that he can get around the clock care and treatment. Poor guy. I do hope that your pup Shadow is able to make a full and speedy recovery from his illness. For tonight you can try feeding him some slghly warmed up cans of baby food (meat and vegetables or squash) to try to entice him to eat. Only a small amount at a time to hopefully not induce his vomiting. Best wishes and take care.

That could be a vaccine reaction. You did not say however which type of medication you gave him for the fever and so I cannot advise if there are side effects to that or not. Please repost with the name of the medication and the active ingredient if needed. I also recommend to call his veterinarian and tell him what’s going on. It is not normal as most dogs do not have vaccine reactions. Is this a way that vaccine reactions could manifest? Not usually but it can be. You are doing everything right by keeping in contact with the vet and getting treatment recommendations. Just keep her calm and quiet tonight and see how she is tomorrow. If not better, I would take her back to the vet for an exam. I strongly suggest you NOT give any more aspirin. If that one dose is not helping more will not be better. Hope this helps.

Normal dog temperature is 99-102.5. The temperature could be elevated due to activity, excitement, inflammation or infection. Typically a vaccine reaction will happen within 24 hours though 48 hours could be possible. Vaccine side effects can sound very scary but they are rare and the protection they provide against disease is worth the risk for most pets (pets with known vaccine reactions may warrant different protocols by their veterinarian). Hello. I am sorry Fiddle isn't feeling well. It is important to note that you can have a reaction to a vaccine that isn't an anaphylactic reaction. The vomiting and diarrhea could have been a reaction to the vaccine or could have been gastritis. The fact that cartilage came up is more suggestive that it could have been a gastritis. Either way you won't know for sure. For the third set you may want to pre treat with an anti histamine +\- steroid. Discuss this with your vet. Also you can make sure you have time to hang around the clinic (or nearby) for an hour or so after the vaccines just in case he does have a worse reaction. Good luck with Fiddle.

It could be a reaction. A dog can have vaccine reactions at any point in life. Reactions usually occur within 24-48 hours after vaccination. For the diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours then feed a bland diet (plain, boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If t doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian. In the future, separate the vaccines to determine which vaccine caused the reaction. Your veterinarian can pretreat with an antihistamine to avoid reactions. Call your veterinarian and report the possible reaction.
