My puppy has worms and increased appetite. Can I wait for the vet?

I my opinion you should go to a pet shop and get some puppy wormer and worm your puppy. If you have no access to buying a wormer, have your vet worm your puppy on Tuesday and then again 2 - 3 weeks later.

However, if the puppy is eating, playing and drinking, and is acting normally, then you can wait until tomorrow. I would just inform the new owners about the worms, and have them bring Dan to the vet right away. The vet will get proper deworming performed, as well as vaccines. Best of luck with them!

Ideally he should be seen by a vet to stabilise his condition and correct dehydration as well as supplemental feeding and a full health check to rule out additional illnesses reducing his appetite. Consider surrendering him to your local shelter to get him the best care. In the meantime an oral worm dose carefully dosed for his weight from your vets office or pet store, pedialyte and a mousse textured high calorie recovery or puppy food is recommended

Poor Raphael. It could be he has tapeworms. Keep feeding him the bland diet of chicken and rice, and it's fine to wait until Tuesday to have him seen as long as he is eating and drinking. Best of luck.

He is lovely! Quite often with lurcher puppies you find that you cant fill them even though they are healthy. I would double check his weight and calculate what his daily ration should be. I would feed this in 3 meals and recommend a slow feeding bowl. If you notice any signs of ill health such as vomiting or diarrohea I would have him checked by a vet in case he has a tummy issue.

Poor Kai! I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling well and I understand your concern! In some puppies with a significant burden of roundworms, vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a means of expelling the worms. This also can cause inappetence from nausea and mild lethargy as a result. Although rare, intussusception (essentially intestines that telescope into one another) can occur in cases of parasitism, which can cause vomiting, lethargy and inappetence. At this point, monitor Kai for changes tonight and try to tempt him to eat with boiled white meat chicken and white rice as a bland diet. If he is still lethargic and not eating by the morning, he should be examined by his vet. The greatest likelihood is simply that his body is working to expel the roundworms.

Eight week old puppies will sleep a lot. But when awake, he should be active, alert, and hungry. Many times it takes multiple deworming treatments several weeks apart to clear an infestation, I would recommend having a fecal sample checked by the veterinarian. Be sure that he is getting his vaccinations, the vet will recommend a series of vaccines every 3-4 weeks until 16-18 weeks old. Until he is fully vaccinated he may still be very susceptible to parvo or distemper. If he is very lethargic, vomiting or diarrhea he needs to see a vet right away. At 8 weeks old I recommend feeding 3 times daily. He should be on a high quality large breed dog food (some great brands are Science Diet, Royal Canin, Eukanuba or ProPlan). At this point you can base what you feed him according to the directions on the package. Be careful when playing that you don't tire him out too much. Be sure he stops for breaks and snacks.
