My puppy has diarrhea and suspected tapeworms. Can I wait for the vet?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Worms do cause diarrhea and a very high worm burden (amount) can cause severe disease. However, if the puppy is eating, playing and drinking, and is acting normally, then you can wait until tomorrow. I would just inform the new owners about the worms, and have them bring Dan to the vet right away. The vet will get proper deworming performed, as well as vaccines. Best of luck with them!

As a first approach I would recommend to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 4 days. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Yes your puppy can definitively wait until tomorrow. Gastrointestinal worms generally speaking cause abnormal digestion and absorption of nutrients from intestine and that usually cause increased appetite. Energy requirements may increase for that reason or for fast growing phase. Worming treatments will soon get rid of them all. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Razor! Intestinal parasites are very common causes of diarrhea. The tapeworm medications are only specific for tapeworm while most 7-8 week old puppies also have roundworms. Also at almost 8 weeks old Razor should be starting his vaccinations. Parvo is a virus that causes diarrhea and can be life threatening. I would have Razor examined by your Vet and bring a stool sample to be tested for other intestinal parasites. He should be dewormed with a broad spectrum drug that gets more than just tapeworms. Other causes of diarrhea in puppies are: intestinal parasites like roundworms, whip and hook worm, coccidia, and giardia, food allergy/intolerance, dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections and other intestinal diseases. Tapeworms are contracted from fleas so be sure that Razor doesn't have fleas and is on a good flea and tick medication. I hope this helps and I wish you and Razor the very best!
