My new 8-week-old puppy has worms in his poop. What should I do next?

Long spaghetti worms tend to be round worms which are transmitted from the mother's milk to the puppy. When every one gets up, call your Vet and get an appointment. Collect a stool sample to bring with you. Archie should be starting his vaccines soon, be dewormed and examined. I wish you all the best!

Since he is new to you, have Archie physically examined by your veterinarian within 72 hours of arriving home to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites. He may need to be dewormed now and in 2 weeks. A third deworming in 4 weeks may completely clear any infection. Once he is feeling better, he can begin or resume his vaccinations.

However, if the puppy is eating, playing and drinking, and is acting normally, then you can wait until tomorrow. I would just inform the new owners about the worms, and have them bring Dan to the vet right away. The vet will get proper deworming performed, as well as vaccines. Best of luck with them!

Olaf is very young and puppies can really deteriorate quickly when they don't feel well. He really needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the extent of the problem. If it is all due to intestinal parasites, your vet can do a fecal test to determine how many types of worms he has and get the appropriate medication for him. He may have other issues, he may benefit from a special high calorie prescription food for a short time to build him back up.

Poor Blue! I'm sorry that he's pooping out worms. It's very common for puppies to have intestinal parasites, so don't worry - they're very easy to treat in most cases :) Depending on the type of worm that you are seeing, you may be able to get an over-the-counter dewormer such as Panacur or Strongid to treat the problem yourself, if you wish. But if he has tapeworms (which look like flat, wiggly grains of rice), a prescription dewormer from your vet would be required to get rid of them. In addition to deworming him, I would also recommend getting him in to the vet as soon as possible for his first puppy exam and vaccines - until he is properly vaccinated, he is at high risk of coming down with a potentially fatal illness like parvo or distemper.

I would agree those look like worms in Meeko's stool. Some puppies need multiple deworming to finally kill all the worms in their intestines. Depending on what type of product you are using, this can be safe to give as often as once a week. Look on the package for directions or post a photo of it and address it with another post. Be aware that humans can get worms from their pets so make sure to be washing your hands well after playing with Meeko, before you eat and don't let him lick you in the mouth, If you have further concerns about worms, contact your human doctor. I would get Panacur from the vet to treat the worms. It's a three day course of treatment, and you will need to give a second course two weeks after the first one finishes to kill all the worms. He should then be dewormed every three months. I hope this helps!
