Why is my puppy making choking noises? Kennel cough or allergies?

Either one is possible with a hacking cough - kennel cough would be most common in a dog his age, but allergies can certainly cause a cough as well. You may want to check in with your vet tomorrow since they just performed a physical exam and make sure there is no additional testing they would want to perform (such as a chest x-ray) with this new information. Kennel cough is often self limiting and no specific treatment is necessary since it is often viral, however your vet might want to prescribe some medications to help with the symptoms. An allergic cough is sometimes treated with cough suppressants or anti-inflammatory medication.

I think it is unlikely that he has treat stuck in his throat. This happens very, very rarely and honestly, in 25 years I have never seen this happen. It would only really happen if there was a motility disorder with his esophagus. The esophagus could be irritated if the treat went down "sideways", sure, but based on his age and your description of the clinical signs, my best guess is that he has kennel cough. It is probably just coincidence that the coughing episodes started with the treat ingestion. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. If he has kennel cough he is contagious to other dogs. There are a few things that come to mind for causes of Dory's symptoms: the more common reason is kennel cough, which is a tracheal cough from bacterial or viral infections. The cough is "goose honk" like and is worse at night and with activity. The dog usually eats and drinks. The cough can trigger the gag reflex which causes the dog to make a gagging sound and motion that sometimes is productive. Dogs can get kennel cough from boarding, grooming, doggie day care, dog parks, playing with other dogs or even from us if we were around a coughing dog. The other possibility is she ate something that irritated her esophagus like a raw hide. I would have her seen by your Vet Wednesday. Most vets treat kennel cough with antibiotics and anti-cough medication. It usually resolves with in 2 weeks. I wish you and Dory the best!

Hello, at 5 months of age the most common reason for coughing/choking is kennel cough. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam and medications. This can progress to a pneumonia quickly and in a small 2# dog this can be extremely serious. I am very worried about this as you stated he was weak and lost his appetite. I don't suggest that you continue to perform any "first aid" for choking on a dog this small as you can easily injury him. I assure you that it is very unlikely he has something stuck in his throat. The most likely causes are an infection or allergies. An object stuck in the nose is possible but typically tends to be one sided and will start to have greenish discharge. It's pretty rare that dogs actually get something stuck in the back of the throat. More likely her throat is irritated, or she has an infection like kennel cough. If the cough continues I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian: while it's difficult to see the very back of a dog's throat without sedation, your vet can help determine what is causing the cough.

Poor Maui. This sounds a lot like an upper respiratory infection. It usually sounds more like they are choking than a true cough. You can try some Benadryl to see if there is an allergy component to it. See link below. Since it has been going on for 2 weeks and she is only 7 months old, I would have your vet take a look at her. She may need some antibiotics. I this is a URI and it's left untreated, it could turn into pneumonia which is much more difficult to treat.
