My dog choked on a treat, then coughed it up. Should I be concerned?

Yes, that information is a bit concerning. I would recommend having Chulo examined by a vet to see if some piece of the treat could be stuck in the nasal passage or back of the throat. It is also possible that there isn't anything there anymore, and that it just caused a lot of irritation.

If Stella is eating her treats too fast, that could be causing the choking. Try giving her treats in smaller pieces, not giving her another piece until she ate the previous piece. Keep an eye on her for now with this behavior, and offer her some water. Her throat may be irritated from choking. I think it is unlikely that he has treat stuck in his throat. This happens very, very rarely and honestly, in 25 years I have never seen this happen. It would only really happen if there was a motility disorder with his esophagus. The esophagus could be irritated if the treat went down "sideways", sure, but based on his age and your description of the clinical signs, my best guess is that he has kennel cough. It is probably just coincidence that the coughing episodes started with the treat ingestion. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. If he has kennel cough he is contagious to other dogs. If the cough is occurring every now and then and your dog seems comfortable, I would not worry about it. It will take some time, (3-4days ), for the inflammation to disappear completely. If at any point symptoms should get worse, then it' s worthy to take another look at him.

She may indeed have a wood chip lodged in her mouth or throat somewhere but since she is drinking and eating without problem I think there may be another cause for the gagging and coughing, Your dog may be suffering from kennel cough or another upper respiratory condition which also causes this kind of coughing and gagging. or she may have an infection in her throat. If the coughing/gagging does not subside by tomorrow take Leica to your vet for an exam.
