Why is my puppy wheezing and sneezing but acting completely normal?

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My guess is that Buddy was reverse sneezing. You can look at some YouTube videos ("reverse sneezing dogs") to see if Buddy's symptoms are similar. Look at a few different videos. If you think this is what he was doing, it is no big deal. The cold air probably just irritated his nasal passages. There is no treatment for reverse sneezing; it is not a problem/issue and it is not life-threatening. Reverse sneezing is very common. If it was not reverse sneezing, then I would suggest you just monitor him and if the behavior recurs then you should take Buddy to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Sounds like a scary moment with Abby! I am wondering if Abby had an episode of reverse sneezing. It is a very loud sucking in sound through the nose and their face has a pained grimaced look. It can be quite scary. Causes for revere sneezing are allergies, foreign body in the nose, an infection, or just a tickle one time thing. Some breeds have the episodes more often, I see it in a lot of Beagles. From your description, it sounds like this could be a reverse sneeze. These are not dangerous (unless it happens continuously, then we would need to look for a cause). This sounds like reverse sneezing which is fairly normal in small breed dogs. Here is a information sheet on this problem. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues. If this ever seems to affect Diva in any way or if these episodes become too frequent, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment to make sure that this is not anything else more concerning. A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. As long as there are no other signs (nasal or eye discharge, coughing, lethargy, decreased appetite, change in behavior, etc) then I would just monitor the situation. I know it's troubling to see her go through these episodes and if they continue or worsen, have your vet take a look at her. They may advise some antihistamines or other medications to lessen the frequency of these if they feel it will help. Good luck
