Why is my dog making a strange crying sound and struggling to breathe?

What I think you are describing is reverse sneezing. It is not anything to worry about. It is very common in dogs. Calming her down during an episode is the exact right thing to do. There is no other treatment needed for this issue. My recommendation is to look up videos on YouTube of dog's reverse sneezing and see if it matches what Abbie is doing. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues. It sounds like a sucking in sneeze through the nose where they tend to hold their mouth open and grimace. I recommend searching YouTube for videos and see if that is what she is doing. It is common in some breeds (beagles). Some causes are allergies, inhaled some dust particles, foreign material stuck up the nose or above the soft palpate. From your description, my main suspicion is that Brownie is experiencing a reverse sneeze. This occurs when irritation occurs in the back of the nasal passages, causing her to dramatically inhale air. (Regular sneezes occur as a result of irritation at the front of the nasal passages, causing air to be pushed out.) During these episodes, you can try blowing directly into her nose (I realize that it sounds strange!), but this can help to change her air flow and stop the reverse sneezing. If these episodes worsen, she could also be experiencing the start of collapsing trachea (unusual in a larger dog), allergic airway conditions or kennel cough, which would require a visit to her vet.
