Why can't my puppy lift his back legs after shots and bloody stool?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chase. The rabies vaccine is typically given in the right rear leg and leptospirosis in the left rear leg. This can result in muscle soreness in some pets. This could be making him uncomfortable and not wanting to use his rear legs normally. However, labrador puppies are pretty tough. So it is unusual for him to still be so painful. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian again or you seek a second opinion. Vaccines can occasionally cause mild lethargy, a slight fever, or pain at the site of the vaccine. If Bear's booster vaccine was given near his backside it is possible that the pain is making him not want to walk and cautious about his back end. I would recommend contacting your veterinarian in the morning - even if Bear seems much better they can note this possible vaccine reaction in his record and potentially prescribe pain medication for him. If he is having difficulty walking, vomits, seems extremely lethargic or develops facial swelling or hives you should see a veterinarian right away as these could be signs of a more serious reaction.

Bloody stool and lethargy could be an adverse reaction to the vaccination. I recommend taking your puppy in to the veterinarian asap due to the high probability that he is having a severe reaction and needs immediate treatment to help stabilize his condition. There are certain changes such as collapsed disc spaces and calcification of intervertebral disc spaces that are consistent disc disease. A dog can be sore from an injection and have swelling in the injection site. This should resolve within 24 hours. I hope this information helps!

By his posture I am very worried about his back. I Am concerned that his spinal cord may be damaged. It also could be an infectious cause such as rabies or a parasite called neospora. Or even meningitis. He needs to be examined by a veterinarian to decide what the best course of treatment is and to make sure that you and your family are not at risk. I am so sorry but it sounds like your pet is having a moderate vaccine reaction. I would highly recommend taking her to an ER vet right away to have your puppy Bella evaluated and treated for a vaccine reaction. They will likely do steroids and anthistamine injection to help stabilize her condition. I really hope that your fur baby Bella is able to make a full and speedy recovery. She may be having a reaction to Rabies, so it is important to have her get pre-meds (from your vet) before her next yearly to help prevent this in the future. Best wishes and take care!

Rocco may be sore at the vaccination site. Do you know did they give the booster vaccine in that back left leg? With animals we give vaccinations under the skin and not in the muscle so it is pretty rare for them to be sore afterwards but it is possible. Some older vets still vaccinate in the muscle in which case they have a higher chance of being sore. Do you know if it was given in the muscle? I suggest you ice the area where the vaccine was given for 5 minutes 2-3 times per day for the next 2 days and let him rest. You can also give BUFFERED aspirin for 2 days ONLY to see if that helps. If he is not improved in two days then get him back tot he vet for a follow-up. You did not mention his weight for me to be able to give you an aspirin dose.
