My 4-week-old puppy's eyes wander. Is it strabismus or injury?

She doesn't appear walleyed in the images provided. She is absolutely adorable! Strabismus is typically hereditary. There is no treatment for inherited strabismus. Unfortunately, the certification does not include genetic testing. The parents may be of normal phenotype and appear normal, but can carry the abnormal genotype responsible for the condition.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like Miles's third eyelid is slightly elevated on that side. Either that, or he has what is called lateral strabismus. This can occur in puppies but should resolve as he gets older. If his eye ever becomes more deviated to the left, or if the other eye starts deviating out, he should be seen by your veterinarian. Otherwise, I would give him a few weeks to see an improvement. At this young age there is sometimes a problem with the muscles controlling the eye, they might be weak or underdeveloped. this usually resolves by the age of 2-3 months though, just monitor it for now and have it checked by your vet when you take Scout to his first visit.

This is a condition known as ventrolateral strabismus, which indicates that the there is damage to either the muscles or nerves that are attached to the eye ball. This can happen with infections, trauma, or tumors. It's best to have Nelly seen by a vet sometime soon, so they can check her for any life-threatening problems that can be potentially treated. This could be a developmental issue or a neurological problem with one of her ocular nerves. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say how this will improve, but it will hopefully not cause any problems for her vision.

From the photo, that looks to me more like a pustule (focal little infection) than a congenital defect (something he was born with). I wonder if he may have gotten a mild injury from playing with the other pups. If it hasn't gone away by the time the pup is ready to go home with you, I would make sure the breeder has the pup evaluated by their vet prior to you picking it up, or make sure the contract includes a clause that the breeder is responsible for having the bump evaluated and addressed.

It is difficult to say what the problem could be. The eye could have a birth defect where it didn't develop to its full size, it could have an internal problem, there could be a scratch on the eye or sustained an injury during or immediately after birth. In addition, the puppy seems to have a very round head. This is often seen in dogs with hydrocephalus. Many times, dogs with hydrocephalus do not show any signs and are normal. Signs of hydrocephalus may include lethargy, seizures, and nonspecific pain. The puppy should be presented to a veterinarian to be examined to try and determine what is wrong so that it may be treated accurately and maximize the chance for recovery. It is hard to know what type of dog the sire was. Some type of small terrier or Chihuahua would be a reasonable guess. There are companies that can test the DNA of the puppies and give a report about possible breeds they have in their lineage.
