Post-parvo puppy: Why does my 6-month-old vomit after eating rice?

Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. I would recommend transitioning her to a different food and consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. I would try 2-3 different foods and see if that makes a difference. If there is no improvement, then I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. You can feed him some boiled white meat chicken (no bone) and white rice in small amounts several times a day. I would leave out small amounts of water at a time, ensuring that he does drink, but doesn't drink too much at once.

Poor little puppy! I can give you a home remedy for Honey to see if that helps, as well as some things to look out for in terms of symptoms of parvo. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, she has blood in her feces, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. If your dog is recovering from parvo you should not be offering any foods other than his regular diet or bland meals of boiled rice and chicken as the other foods may cause the already irritated intestinal lining to become worse or prolong the irritation. If he is not eating his food there may still be some underlying pain or GI upset. You can offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken for a day or so, however if the lack of appetite continues or he does not begin to eat his food it is best to seek veterinary care.

I am a little concerned that Honey is continuing to vomit. I would recommend waiting at least 4-6 hours between meals to give her time to digest her food. If she is not on an antinausea medication, like Cerenia, I would recommend calling your vet and seeing if you can pick some up. If she is on an antinausea medication and is still vomiting, this is very concerning. Hopefully the vomiting will stop on its own but if it doesn't you need to have Honey rechecked.
