My 2-day-old puppy's umbilical cord is bleeding. How can I stop it?

Poor pups. This can sometimes happen with the umbilical cords, especially if the sutures are placed close to the skin. I would not recommend placing any topical ointment on a bleeding wound. Instead I would suggest cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water and then flushing it daily with just sterile Saline, both found at your local pharmacy. This will hopefully keep the area from getting infected until they can be seen. Take special care not to soak the pups and only use a gauze to apply this so that it quickly dries. Newborn pups can’t regulate their temperature until they are around 1-2 weeks of age. Then it’s best to take them back to your vet for a recheck exam since this is a complication from a previous visit. The vet may need to place skin glue to the open area and possibly give the pups some antibiotics. I hope that your pups are able to recover well. Best wishes and take care.

What a cute little puppy!! I would not do anything to the cord stump at this time. Watch for redness, swelling and discharge. If you notice any of these things, or the puppy seems unwell then have it examined by your vet. If the opening into the abdomen does not close over properly there is the risk of an umbilical hernia forming which would need to be surgically repaired.

The umbilical cords should shrivel and fall off on their own, however you can tie off the cords with floss/suture and them trim above them if the mother is unable to do so. The remainder of the cord will then shrivel and fall off on its own.

This actually looks like some normal dark pigment on the tip of the tail. It does not look concerning at this time and should start to grow hair and look more normal in the next two weeks. Just keep an eye on it for now. If you notice any areas of redness, or flakey skin, then it's best to take them to the vet for an evaluation. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately it sounds like Sunny is very very sick. I would recommend having Sunny into a vet right away. They will check for signs of congenital abnormalities (developement problems) and will see if there is anything that can be done. In the mean-time, you want to keep Sunny warm, but not too hot. Make sure she is not lying directly on the heat pad or she will get burns. You can rub some honey on her gums to help get some glucose into her, and see if you can encourage her to suckle on the mom. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further trauma. Have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose infection or injury. Yoda may need both antibiotics and medication for pain or inflammation. If you can't take him just yet, clean the area with diluted betadine or chlorhexidine and place an e-collar on him. You can buy them in most pet stores. Monitor for resolution, but if gets worse or if he becomes lethargic or stops eating, get him to your vet.

I would recommend a cold pack for 10 to 15 minutes 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. I would also feed only soft food. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction!
