Puppy umbilical cord not falling off: Is it normal? What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 3 years old | 14 lbs

My dog gave birth this past Saturday (4 days ago). All of the puppies umbilical cords have fallen off except one. Is this normal? Should I put anything on it like iodine or something? Thanks for your help.

What a cute little puppy!! I would not do anything to the cord stump at this time. Watch for redness, swelling and discharge. If you notice any of these things, or the puppy seems unwell then have it examined by your vet. If the opening into the abdomen does not close over properly there is the risk of an umbilical hernia forming which would need to be surgically repaired.
