Is my puppy safe from ticks at the cabin with collar and meds?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Benson. There are a variety of safe flea and tick preventive medications. I prefer topical formulas because the flea or tick is repelled. When you give an oral chew the flea or tick has to bite your pet to die. This will still kill the pest, but it allows diseases to spread to your pet. For that reason, I prescribe Vextra 3D. Frontline Plus is also a good product, but does not cover quite as many pests as Vectra. Vinegar and water will not be effective. I hope this information helps!

Hi there. I would recommend using a good quality flea and tick preventative medication such as Nexgard or Bravecto - both of these are extremely effective at killing ticks. If those aren't available in your area, you could also try a Seresto flea/tick collar, or a topical spot-on product like Frontline or K9 Advantix.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tofy! We would need a closer picture of the tick and we would need to see the under side as well to identify the tick. I would recommend the Seresto collar or the oral flea and tick preventatives like Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto. Vinegar does not kill any species of tick. In my experience the natural products do not work for ticks or fleas and the risk of the diseases they transmit is greater than the use of non-natural products. There are no proven safe or effective home remedies to prevent fleas and ticks in dogs. Since ticks (and even fleas) can carry some nasty disease, Pudgy definitely needs protection! I love Seresto collars for their protection. Advantix or Frontline Plus are topicals that you can get over the counter, but in my opinion they do not prevent fleas as well as Seresto collars or prescription oral preventatives. Even with protection, you should still check Pudgy every night for attached ticks - don't forget folds around the ears or toes! Pudgy will probably be okay for the trip without being current on vaccines, but I think he should have them updated as soon as you get back if he wasn't done with his recommended series. Just make sure he isn't around other unvaccinated dogs.

Hello! You should be able to use both Frontline and either a Preventic or Seresto collar, but only one collar. There should not be any interactions between any of the medications. I think using two preventives for hiking in the northeastern US is an excellent idea to prevent ticks and tick borne disease. I would also recommend looking into getting Winston vaccinated for Lyme disease as an additional precaution. I hope this is helpful! Where there is one tick, there could be more. Any time you go outside with Max, he needs to be checked thoroughly for ticks. If he is over 7 weeks old, a Seresto flea and tick collar is safe, just make sure he can't chew on it! You can also purchase Frontline spray - spray a small amount on a towel and use the towel to wipe down Max.
