My puppy is throwing up and dry heaving with a rumbling stomach. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Schnoodle | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 9 days old | 3 lbs

My 3 pound puppy threw up three times today. Twice within two minutes and the next about 30 minutes later after giving her a little goats milk. She will wake up and start to play and bite me and then will start dry heaving for a few seconds and stop. While laying with her while she was sleeping, her tummy was rumbling pretty loud.

Poor girl. Unfortunately my major concern here is that Winnie may have a foreign body. I would highly recommend fasting her for 6hrs and then offer her a small portion of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice and small amounts of non-flavored Pedialyte to keep her hydrated until you can get her seen by your vet. The vet needs to do a complete physical examination and likely will recommend x-rays if a foreign body ingestion is suspected. Best case scenario is that Winnie has a really upset stomach from something she ingested and not a true obstruction. However, the next best thing is to get her seen by your vet as soon as they are open in the morning.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would be very worried about Winnie because when dogs vomit up all the dinner this is a huge concern for a "foreign body". This is when animals eat something like a sock that blocks the gut. Without surgery they will die if the sock doesn't pass, and once you get clinical signs like you are describing, if it is caused by a foreign body, is incredibly unlikely to pass on it's own. This could also be caused by a gastritis or pancreatitis. Either way, I would get Winnie to a vet ASAP. The longer you wait on a foreign body the increased chance of a perforation and peritonitis which is a very serious condition. I would recommend taking her to your vet right away, or an emergency clinic if your vet isn't open. Your vet will do x-rays to look to see if it looks like there is a blockage. If you can't think of anything she ate, it's generally ok to wait 24 hours to see if she get back on her food naturally. Sometimes something goes wrong in the gut and we don't know why but it resolves quickly. If she's not back to normal in 24 hours, or has any vomiting or diarrhea in the mean time, she needs to go to her vet for evaluation and supportive care. Why is my 7-week puppy sick, dry heaving, won't vomit, and bloated?

So cute! She could have a parasite, infection, or an upset stomach from something she ate. You could take a stool sample to her vet and have it tested for parasites and then your vet can prescribe an appropriate dewormer based on the results. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and see if that helps, too.

My dog is throwing up and won't eat or drink. Is a vet visit needed?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Winnie. Yes, I recommend that she sees a veterinarian if she is still not eating and drinking. I worry that she will become dehydrated being such a small dog. Based on her exam findings, treatment can be recommended or diagnostics if necessary. For example, fluids can be given under the skin to rehydrate her and anti-nausea medication to control any further nausea and vomiting. I hope this information helps!

My dog keeps throwing up. What can I do to help her feel better?

Poor girl. You can try fasting her for 12 hrs and then slowly introducing a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese in small portions. This can help settle her stomach if she just got into something she shouldn’t have and it just upset her stomach. If she is still puking then it’s best to have her seen by your vet for testing to determine the underlying cause (kidney disease, pancreatitis, infection) and medications (ie anti-nausea medicine, antibiotics, etc) to help her feel better. My dog throws up after eating but seems better. Should I worry?

I am sorry to hear that Wyatt is so ill. He needs to have some tests ran by your vet to determine his underlying illness right away so that we know what he needs to get well again. He may have a stomach ulcer, really upset stomach from something he ate, a foreign body obstruction, infection or any number of organ malfunctions. I would recommend fasting him for now to prevent any more vomiting episodes and offering him only small amounts of Pedialyte non flavored to keep him as hydrated as possible. You can offer him a liquid diet (Ensure or pet formulated one from your local pet store) to see if he will keep that down until you can get him in to your vet on tomorrow. Hopefully they can diagnose the underlying problem and get him proper treatment right away. I hope Wyatt is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Best wishes and take care.

My 11-month puppy threw up after eating. Is her stomach upset?

That does sound like an upset stomach. If the vomiting only happened once, you can try offering a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice to try and settle Cloe's stomach, however if she can't keep anything down, or has been ill for more than a day, it would be best to bring her to a vet to rule out issues such as parasite, GI upset, illnesses, infections, etc, that could be causing it.
