My puppy threw up brown, ate raw potato. Should I call the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 8 days old | 5 lbs

My puppy just threw up a brown substance. At first I thought it was poo, but it kind of smells like her food. I could notice something that looked like a potato shell; if it was, she probably ate a raw potato. Should I worry?

I am sorry to hear about Coca! It is pretty common for dogs to occasionally vomit if they ate something that didn't agree with their stomach, but we do want to be certain we don't have something more serious going on here. In puppies we especially want to watch vomiting because of a disease called Parvo virus which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and anorexia. This is a serious disease which requires aggressive treatment. Because of this, if your puppy continues to vomit, has dairrhea (especially if it has blood in it), is lethargic or not eating then she should see a vet right away. We would also worry if she ingested a large piece of uncooked potato about a possible obstruction, so this would be another reason to monitor her closely. If she seems to have a normal level of energy, is not having diarrhea and doesn't vomit any more then I would just continue to monitor her.

Hello, you should only attempt to induce vomiting with peroxide twice. If the potato was not moldy then Jody should be fine. He may have some diarrhea which may require anti-diarrhea medications, but otherwise, there are no toxins you need to worry about. If he did not chew the potato then this may be more of a problem as it could be too big and may cause an obstruction. If you think that he did not chew the potato or if you think the potato may have been moldy, then you can bring him to your veterinarian to have them induce vomiting and take radiographs tonight. Otherwise, you can monitor him at home for any vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite and have him evaluated by your veterinarian if he does develop any of these tomorrow. However, in puppies, vomiting can be caused by parasites and dangerous viral infections. I recommend keeping an eye on Ciroc for continued vomiting, loss of energy/appetite, and diarrhea. As long as Snowball is acting okay and does not continue to vomit, I would not worry too much. It is not unusual for puppies to vomit occasionally especially if it is been a long time since they've eaten. If Snowball becomes lethargic, develops diarrhea or continues to vomit, she should be seen by a veterinarian. Potential causes for vomiting besides that described above include parasites, eating something irritating to the intestinal tract, infections or metabolic issues such as liver and kidney problems.

My 4-month-old puppy is hacking and throwing up. Should I worry?

Yes, I'd be concerned about Coco, Lynsey. She sounds sick. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

It sounds like Princess may have eaten something naughty (trash, toilet paper, paper plate, sock, toy stuffing, other) that decided to come back up. The fact that she has shown no signs today is promising. If she has eaten and kept it down, you are likely in the clear. Caveat: Do watch her closely for the next 2-3 days because if a smaller piece of whatever it was did get through and gets lodged in the intestine, you'll see lots more vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. If this happens, it's time to see the vet. If Layla is clinically normal, you can consider monitoring her, especially since it has been many hours since she ingested the potato. It is possible that she will digest the potato or pass it. My dog ate potatoes, threw up, but seems better. What should I do?

If larry is not throwing up anymore and overall appears happy again, then I would start with feeding him small amounts of food over three or 4 feedings/day. Add some boiled white rice to his normal feed. If he does not vomit anymore, is lively and does not have diarrhea, then he is likely over a bout of food indiscretion and you need to do nothing more. If he gets diarrhea or keeps on vomiting, then I suggest you take him to your veterinarian for an exam.
